TERRIBLE RAILWAY DISASTER.

New York, August 11. A terrible railway-disaster is reported from Illinois. A train which was proceeding to Niagara; while passing over a bridge winch was on fire, fell through to the river below. Fully 300,.persons have been 'killed and' injured. ••".:

New York August 12. .Further particulars of the railway disaster in Illinois'state that the train consisted of two engines with a large number of cars, which contained over. 1000' passengers, chiefly from the town of Peoria. Tlio driver of the foremost engine, on approaching the bridge, saw that it was in flames, but was unable to stop his train in time to avert a oatastrophe. The engines and carriages were completely -wracked, over 100 persons being lulled outright and 400 injured.

TRIAL UF A RABBIT EXTERMINATOR,' (United Press Association.) Blenheim, August 13.' A public trial of Stenhouse and Smith's patent rabbit exterminator was held on Saturday at the Dnminger station.- The machine destroys rabbits by injecting sulphuric acid gas through the burrows, death appearing to be almost instantaneous-. Several burrows were fumigated and dug out, numbers of dead rabbits being found. Inspectors Pas'son and Blundell, of the Kabbit Department, and Inspector Colletfc, of the Awatere Rabbit Board, were practical men from town. Great satisfaction was expressed at the working of the machines, and it is.understood the' inspectors intend to report favourably. The machines are simple and "inexpensive, and well adapted for ordinary sheep run.

Auckland, August 12. The Government steamer Stella has left Bussell, - bound for Kermadec Island's,'.which are to he formally annexed by New, Zealand. The Stella hason board Mr S. Percy Smith, Assistant-Surveyor-General, and Mr T. F. Cheesenian, who are to make a survey of the islands.
