Atatnecting of the Wellington City Council on Thursday evening last, a letter was rend from Messrs Ashcroft and Co., offering to orecfc four arc lamps of 3000-candle power each, and ten incandescent lamps, provided the Council paid them £IOO and supplied poles fifty feet high. _ The offer was accepted, but the Council suggested that the arc lamps should be less powerful than 3000-candle power, and .-houlcl bo erected not more than thirty fe.t from the ground. Notwithstanding the very unfavorable weather last evening, about fifty persons attended the St. Matthew's winter evening entertainment, when tho following programme was successfully rendered Glee, ''May Day," Choir; Solo pianoforte, Mies Kibblowhite; Song, " Whoro are the friends of my youth," Mr A, Re'eae; Glee, "Gipsy Tent," Choir'; bolo and Chorus, " Sweet Bye-and-Byo," Master Fred Nicol and Choir; Song, ''Anchored,' 1 Mr Coleman; Song and Chorus, " The Golden Shoro " Mr Reeco and Choir.; Song, "The Bugler," Mr Gaskill; Glee, "Tho Wreath," .Choir; Son?, " Southern Breeze," Mr Wickerson ; Song, " Cockles and Mussels," Mr Coleman ; Gleo, " The Carnival," Choir; Song, " Balaclava," Mr Gaukill; " God Save_ tho Queen," Tho Choir boys acquitted themselves remarkably well, especially the soloists Mr Reeco and Masters Fred Nicol and E. Bennett, the lien's share falling to the latter, who possesses a Bweet voice, and appeared equal to tho occasion. Mrs Paige deserves great praise for the manner in which she'has trained her little pupils, who, on tho other hand, deserve credit for the admirable rendering of tho several concerted pieces. The accompaniments, with one exception, were played by Mrs Paige, and although the state of tho weather, was not calculated to produco anything like enjoyment unless in the presence of a - roaring fire, still the audience by their applause proved that they appreciated the programme submitted to thein.
