The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, AUGUST 2, 1887. THE MASTERTON GAS DIFFICULTY.

At the'last meeting of the Borough Council a proposal was made to reduce the price of gas iu Masterton. Tljo • motion waslost, andapparently Councilloi'B wore wise in rejecting it, as if they cannot manufacture gas profitably at ibe current rates, they were unlikely to benefit by reducing them, There are,"however, somoreason:* which hubgest'the idea that after alia reduction of rates is tho true policy to change the present most unprofitable enterprise into ut commercial success, ft may be affirmed without fear of contradiction that for some years to come our gas works must under any circumstances, be worked at a loss, and the problem is not how to make them immediately remunerative,' because this is impossible, but to make thorn pay at as early a da to as possible. The-Borough Council arc doing their best to administer their gas department prudently and economically but there.ia a natural disinclination to faoo a very awkward position which in the direct outcome of past errors of judgment, It will be vcinembered that the Council intrusted the expenditure of a very large sum of money, about eight thousand pounds, to an utter strangor who happened to have collected an interesting assortment of testimonials. It was not long before the Cqunoil began to realise that they had made a bad choice, but then they were reluctant, to speak and afraid to act and bo the mischief was allowed to grow. The stranger too wht) was spending (lis thousands kept up apearances, he had the good fortune to have at his back an organ which was ready to jump down the throat of any one who ventured to cribicizo his work and when the celebrated tank turned out to be a sievo, the cracks and rents and holes in it were regarded rather as dispensations of Providence .than as enginooring faults, indeed tho Council took over from their 'officer a most scandalous piece of workwithout formal remonstrance. The result is that a great, many persons refuse to discard kcrosono lamps, because thoy believe that sooner or lator the tank will have to be re-built, and that tho supply of gas will have to be discontinued. The public will not have confidence in the gas supply till they, are assured of two things, first, that the tank is trustworthy, and secondly, that, the price charged for gas is reasonable Itwouldbe better for the Council to face the difficulty, and it any cost secure tho confidence of the public. Putting off the evil day when the*public must be told by a rate that gas is an unprofitable local industry,, will. only intensify tho difficulty. The lank will have to ho put in order, and tho. price of gas roduced, then, and not till then will it como into -general use, and be •manufactured on a scale that will ultimately ' yield a .profit,. For some years to come, a special rate to defray the interest on tho monoy borrowed for gas jpurpbseß must bo levied as a matter-of oourse, but the duration of the spocial rate may b.e .shortenedby the public being assured beyond doubt that they can obtain .an uninterrupted supply of gas at a reasonable price.
