MASTERTON ROAD BOARD.

A meeting of the above was held on Satuiday last. Preseut—Messra W, H. Beet hum (chairman), R, D. Da°g aud R. Welch. The minutes of last meeting wore read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE, From Mr W, G. Beard, stating that Mr Meredith refused to sign conveyance. The Clerk was instructed to forward a copy of the letter to the Whareama Road Board, as the Masterton. Road Board were no longer interested in it. From.Colonial Secretary re. tracing required to verify rateable value. The Clerk intimated that the request bad bean attended to.. From Commissioner Property Tax department, advising the payment of £SB 16s 4d, balance of subsidy due to Board. From Colonial Secretary, acknowledging receipt of result of poll taken in the.Masterton Road District on a proposal to borrow 1710. uudor the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 188G, and 'informing ilium that the same had been duly gazetted. From Mr R. Douald of the Taueru, asking tbu Board to take steps to prevent cattle straying ou the road in his immediate neighborhood,.'. .MrTaplin was appointed ranger to'' abate the nuisance. From Mr A. Johnston, apologising for his absence. FromMr Mawley, stating that be bad aii objection to any further roads boing taken through his property in the Wangaehu. From the Treasury re payment of interest on debentures; giving particulars issued.' From Mr N. C. Christenson, Fernridge, asking naroo of owner of section 36. Waipoua Block, and. stated that owing to tho creek being blocked up it flooded the flafcgroiind. The Clerk was instructed to nply, Bating that the pioperty was owned by Mr Woodroofe, and that tho Board would have the creek cloared. From the District Survoy Office, stating that the crown grant for the Maiaurikapa Block was dated 27th June, 1868, and tho right to take roads through it has therefore lapsed. From Mr D.McLachlon, intimating his willingness to pay his share of Mr Blatchford'a taxes for tho road round the Bluff, From Mr J. Hessey, complaining that his fence on the Upoki had been cut for the purpose of getting an outlet to the main road, and wishing to know if the Board had authorised its destruction as ho intended to take action to prevent a repetition of the offense. After a short discussion the Board decided to fence tho road off leading through Mr Hesaoy's property. DEPUTATIONS, Mr Donovan waited on the Board' with loferenoe to the road leading to his property on tho Opaki, and wag informed that the Board bad decided to feuco tbo same' forthwith. Mr Matheeon attended, and opposed tho line of road which the Beard had decided to take through Mr Heasey's property. It was in'oonvon-. ient to him and would niako one of bis j paddocks a triangular oue, He was of opinion that if the Board would carry out the suggestion of Mr Osborne and take tbo road out by the Camp, instead 3i through MrHessev'B property it would be more convenient to the settlers. The Chairman intimated that the Board were not iu a position to altor the present road as laid off, but they would give it their favorable consideration when in funds. Mr Oaborue also attoDded in reforeuce to the same matter, and was informed that although the road into the Camp was very dosirable, the Board had docided'to make no alteration. Mr Cade waited on the Board, re the proposed road leading to his property, and was informed by the Cbairmau that enquiries had been made with reference to getting the sanction of.'the Natives,, but they would not allow them to surrey it, To form the road it would have to be done under the Public Works Act. The Board would have to survey through the hills to the \Vangaehu Road, and a road in this. direotion would be very difficult, but, in any caße, the Board would have it surveyed from where the Natives objected. The Board also' intended, when funds permit, to take the road from Mr Cade's to the Te Ore Ore Road, tho money for whioh would have to come out of the rates or a loan. The Board fully

realized that Mr Cade should have a right of road to his property, would push on the work as speedifflfas possible. • Mr Mawley attended in person to oppose, the lino of road being made through a portion of his property, on the Waingaehn. ' " .;! ~l Until it had; .been sifi/eyed by their engineer, they could not say whether it '}, would be taken through the flat or nojj( but if they could possibly avoid it, they would not do so. Mr Martin waited on the Board and asked to be released from the payment - of rates towards tho support of the Bluff road. At the time the poll wj\, taken he wns away iu Wellington m important private business or he have voted against the proposal. The road was no use to him any more than it was to Mr Blatchford, and if they exempted that gentleman from the payment of rates, lie was also entitled to the same concession. He was the smallest landowner on that side of the river and it was very hard that he should be compelled to contribute towards a road that he could not use. The Board informed Mr Martin'that they would take the matter into consideration, and if they found he wan placed in the ~ same position as Mr Blatchford they would deal with his grievance accordingly. 'a Mr McPbeo, a resident of the Opaki f also attended and called the attention of the Board to the way in which certain contractors whilst procuring metal undermined portions of his fenca abutting ou the roadside, and asking who was responsible for its reconstruction. MrMcPhee was informed that the Overseer would be instructed to arrange the matter with him. . PETITIONS. Messrs Stuckey and Osborne ta& two petitions re division of but as there were other petitions in circulation, it was recidud to take no action till the whole of them were brought in. •' ■" s ' SPECIAL lUTKS.
