MR MEREDITH'S LETTER.
[TO Tin: LDITOK.j Sir.—l notice tluit Mr Meredith ' lias. writton at some length with ! vpspcct to youi* loader of Friday last. The lettor itself is, I admit, written in a moderato tone, and deals with most questions at issue in a fair spirit of criticism. I have, however to take exception to several points, viz,, the reference to the '> Sheep Act" and the Boads and Bridges Construction | Act." I have' never changed ray opinionwith respect-to a representative's ■duty, on these questions, raid whereover I observe what I consider to be the lukwarmues?, or want of energy.on the pert of officials connected with the Stock Depart-ment,-I shall, while holding'a public position in the Colony, deem it to he my duty to insist upon strict enquiry being made into the circumstances of tkfl ease. I point with much pleasure tpe result,/)f my action, the eradi-cation-of scab from within our boundaries, and almost, I am glad to say, from the whole Colony. I had 110 selfish ends to serve. Yvith respect to the question of the Eoads and Bridges Construction Act, as Mr Meredith has it "The exceptionally favorable treatment of one of those roads-under the Boads and Bridges Construction Act." I entirely fail to understand the allusion, I am not aware of having favored anyone in arranging the schedule. The public interest and welfare guided both myself and Mr Buchanan in the matter. On this and any other point I challenge the fullest enquiry. In conclusion, 1 trust that I, 100, shall always have sufficient courage to discharge my duty to my country, should the constituency as hitherto, favor me with their confidence. I am, etc., George Beetham. July 20th, 1387.
