The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, JULY 26, 1887. MR E. MEREDITH'S EXPLAN ATION.

We trust that we are fully sensible of the extremely courteous-terms, in which Mr Meredith, in our last issue, disclaimed the position which wo assigned to him in the present election contest. Would that '■ all newspaper correspondence during the present election could be. elevated to the admirable touo which characterises Mr Meredith's. letter I' - We' still, hpwever, -consider that Mr Meredith's position in the present party contest ■is open to question, when he, its he himself admits, voted in 1884 in favor of a -candidate, ..for whose political views he had no sympathy whatever, This is an admission which will damage 'Mr Meredith, in the eyes of impartial critios. Why did he not three years ago, when he appeared on the public platform, and assisted Mr McCftrdle'scandidature,'declare that he hadno sympathy with his political views ?: Why did he publicly encourage men to vote for a candidate whom at heart-he condemned ? The reasons assigned by Mr Meredith are eminently unsatisfactory! ' According to his own explanation, Mr Beetham had tampered with the administration' of the Counties and the -Sheep Act. There was, in fact, as everybody knows a scab question and a road' question, in which Mr Meredith considered'ho had a personal interest, and beoauso he could not get Mr- Beetham tc adopt his, view', he forgot ; his'duty as an elector of the Colony, and did violence to his own political convictions by voting for Mr McCar-die.-It is satisfactory to know-that : at last-Mr Meredith has found- a candidate after his own heart, and wo can congratulate him, although we. feel somewhat'sorry "for the- candidate. We must, however, confess to a feeling of astonishment -when .iwo- r find; Mr .Meredith assertingihat ;Mr .'Beethain should-showpractical sympathy with the majority of the electors, by recognising Mr Hawkins as.- the most fitting contribution the Masterton-dis-trict can give_ to the Legislature. Is Mr. Meredith Berioua, or is he only poking run-at Mr Beetham? He ought to know that Mr Hawkins is absolutely in a minority in this district, and that oven Mr Hawkins' own friends.admit, that the contest lies betwoen Mr Beetham and Mr Hogg,-Are wo .tobelieve that a gentlenmn ; of Mr.Meredith's ability and discernment is. so far out of touch with public opinion- as. not .to know this ? If at the coming poll Mr Hawkins polls' one fourth of the number of available votes, we will publicly make Mr.Meredith -a handsome apology, but in the interim he Avill perhaps excuse us for regarding Mr Hawkins as a candidate who has not a shadow of. a chance. We must, too, demur to the picture Mr Meredith ■paints of Mr Hawkins. ■ We are asked to regard'him as a patriot of the first water,;a man possessing a"'vigorous intellect, practised ability, and integrity of aotion. Mr Hawkins-is undoubtedly a clever man and; a wellmeaning enthusiast, but his errors of judgment and his, faults; of temper unfit him altogether for the position to which he aspires, We have, how-' ever, no desire to pull Mr Hawkins topieces. The public have made up their minds as to his merits and his chances, and if Mr Meredith's eyes are' closed now to the real position of the contest, they mil he widely opened on

■the polling day. We would sooner take Mr Meredith's assurance that he has neither .directly-nor indirectly,bv • fluencod either Mr Hawkins or'.Mr . jlogg in coining forward than accept the reference •which ho gives us to the two candidates themselves,. If, as some'have, supposed, tho. trio are a "confederate; power organised to' run Mr.(s.'3eethara,out of his old seat, it would be idle for one gehial .corifederate-, to : appeal for a'.certificate of innocencb to liis-colleagiieß.
