MASTERTON SCHOOL.
The ordinary meeting, (if Masterton School' at the Oddfellows Hall last eveuiiig (Thursday), Present—Messrs' J. 0. : Boddington, (Chairman), W. Lowes;.J. Paytori, E. McEwen and W. Cuilen, '. • The minutes of the previous meeting wore read and confirmed, and the Treasurer reported a"debit balance of £6l9s Bd, with a capitation due of about f 36. : Correspondence was read from the . Education Board, stating that the Board had.agceed to appoint Mr Willis to the new' school at Mauriceville, and that temporary assistance would bo sent to the Masterton schoor if required. That Sergeant Bezar should give instruction to the cadets once a fortnight, th e Board could-not authorise the expenditure for the extension, of the school porches From Town Lands Trust, requesting information re the £SO applied for.: - It was reported that Sergeaut Bezar had only attended to give instruction to the cadets' four times since Christmas. After a slight discussion it was resolved that the Head Master's report re Sorgeantßezar's visits be forwarded to the Board, and that it bepoiiited out to them that tho attendances were not in accorwith the rules. Tho Chairman reported that-the gravelling of the Bchool playground had been carried out iu an efficient manner, under the supervision of tho Mesßrs Cuilen and McEwenflso deserved .the .thanks ..of the Committee for the attention thoy, had given to the work. The sub-committee recommended that the girl's playground Bhould bo gravelled, which was decided to be carried out when funds permitted.... Messrs Boddington. and Payton ..were appointed a sub-committee to to the request ijf the Tow.n.Lands Tzust. . The Head Master's report was read, showing that there wore. 562 on the roll, with an avcrago attendance of 447; that, the playground wjb in good order; that the maps granted by..tho Committee were ordered, and that £S had been expended ou new books lor the School Library. The mistress of .thd-Side School reported 108 ou the : an average of 84, and that 15 had 'been drafted to the Main school. /. : Accounts amounting to £29 8s Sd were passed for paymeut. The school diary was read, showing that the visiting member for the month, Mr A. W, He«g, had-neglected to atteud to his duties,..:and"it was he be aßked for an. exp'analHf of his noglect. ■ W As Mr Leaky had foiled, to attend four consecutive meetings of-'- the committeethree general and olio special—it was resolved that tho secretary be instructed, to write to the Board, .and enquire- if a member of the comtirittee forfeited his seat through continued non-attendance, aud to point out that tlio Act did not provide for it, Mr Lowes was appoii)£ed yisiting member for tho ensuing month, SECOND SCHOOL SHE. The Chairman referred to the actitt of ■the Board in the iicj[|nd School site roport, and the recomme"Sdation passed by the committee in favor of the Simcox acre. . He said.that 'the committee appointed by the Board had their report ready for presentation at'.the meeting held on tho 25th,; of May, duly signed by the Chairman, but Mr A. W. Brown had informed theßoard that circumstances had siheoarisen which justified him in .thinking, it would be better to withold their report. This was done and themattor sholved. Ho read tho report of tho Education Board meating. hold 29th June, showing what the Question and thought should take some action with reference to it. . Mr Payton said thero was an aspect of the case, he would have spoken on had Mr Hogg been present, as the action that gentleman had taken in-the matter had practically killed the second school question and ho considered that the public .ought tpinow the whole dago. He intimated that he intended to go into the matter.at the next'.meeting. . . Mr Lowes said he' had -made up his mind to go fully into the question aud get it settled, as he was sure thoy sick of hearing of the aeciipd school |», Ho thought the' question had heeu sufficiently ventilated by tho committee and Board, and.' unlusa something were soon done the money for the second .'school would, be. lost altogether to the town.
