CARTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The first meeting of the above Council was held at the County Council Chambers on Tuesday. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. Fairbrother),Cra A. McKenzie, J. Bayliss, A, Booth, 6, - W.. poller, T, Moore, and W. Vickerfltaff. . Tho Returning Offico'r reported the result of tho election- in reforonce to the Mayor. and Councillors, and they, having made the usual declaration, took their, seats.. . . Th'eTreasurer'reported a credit balance at the Bank of £47 15a, with a farther subsidy now duo from tho Government of £.1.5. . " '

The Mayor explained to the Cra what the Town Board anticipated doiug in reference to street lighting, v .Mr H, H. Wolterswas appointed Town Clerk and Treasurer at a salary of LSO; ;£erannum. . '.; ; y •• •; , The Clerk.was, instructed .to apply fop the use of the County Council. Chambers for the meetings of tho Council.'' V It,was resolved to. invite applications for the combined office of poundkeepor, dog tax collector, lamplighter and inspector of nuisances, the salary being fixed at £25 per annum, and that a f- in the £ rate be levied for the ensuing year, Cra Baylisa, Booth and the Clerk were

appointed to adjust tho Western ;&aidaries of tho.Boroutfh in conjunotiiiJKtli thq.purvoyor, Mr E. Anderson, ■ Tho Mayor, Cri MoKenzie, Dollar, and Moore wero appointed a by-laws Committee,

The Olerk was instructed to. ask Mr Underbill to give a price for making street lanvps, and also'.to get permission from the Ttlegraph Department to allow the lamps to be fiied to the. telegraph posts, as they were convenient. . The Clerk .was instructed .to :wk : Mr Itoon :'tfli ratify the'offer which 7 he made to late Town |soard in respect to half an acre of land for a gravel pit. ; The estimated expenditure for tie year was reported to be £485. ./.Several small accounts;were passed for payment.
