We challenged our local contemporary yesterday to prove or withdraw an insulting charge winch ho brought "forward against Mr. Buchanan's supporters and against a working man candidate for the Wairarapu district, The reply of our contemporary is characteristic! lie pleads Ist that the offending paragraph was " a spicy little notice," 2nd that ho published it " as hearsay," 3rd " that wo have been guilty of a similar fault against the Obsorver." We may perhaps point out that if the paragraph in question was untruthful it can hardly be excused either on the ground that it'was spicy or on the contention that it was hearsay, or on the argument that wo have committed, in the opinion of our local contemporary, an error of tho same description. We again ask our contemporary either to withdraw or substantiate tho gross charge ho made against Mr Buchanan's supporters, and against Mr Gratton. We may say that we prefer to settle one point at a tune, and object to our quarrel with the Observer being dragged as a herring across the scent. Let our contemporary give a stiaightlbrward answer to the challenge we havo made, and we will then discuss with him tho niattor'iu dispute between ourselves and tho Observer. The public havo a right to know whether the attack made on Mr Buchanan's supporters is truo or false ;—wo affirm that it is a tissue of falsehoods, and wc defy our local contemporary to show that there is a particleoftrtit.il ill it.
