The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY JULY 13. 1887. MR BUCHANAN'S MEETING.

Mr Buchanan's friends could not have wished him a better meeting than tho crowded and, attentive audience which listened to his able address on Mondav last. There was, it is true, an opposition eleinnnt in the gathering, consisting of somo of those worthies, "uo eye bath seen such scarecrows," who

have undertaken to march through Coventry with Major Bunny, and who were evidently anxious to embarrass Mr Buchanan by carefully' prepared catch questions. • We need hardly say that they met their match, and did not score a Bingle point by their unworthy taotica, Mr Buchanan's speech was well delivered, and well re wived. If lees frothy and . flowery than Mr Bunny's oration, it was far more substantial and interesting. If there, was one point more , than another in it, which distinguiahedit from the ordinary run of political addressee, it was the public testimonial which it accorded to the character and ability of Mr Bryce. We hare long thought that the hero of Parihaka was the one strong man who was. fitted to be our leader,-and we are delighted to find that o member like Mr Buchanan, who possesses the confidence and respect of all partiea in the House, has boldly indicated him as the man who ought. to be Premier. We have had some Premiers in flew Zealand of whom we have had reason to be prond. Notably Mr Stafford, Mr Waterhouse, and Sir John Hall, but we venture to assert that if Mr. Bryce's health ever permitted him to discharge the onerous duties of our highest policical office. Now Zealand would have a leader who would be a head and shoulders above any other public man on our roll of statesmen and rulers. We thank Mr Buchanan for calling'' upon Mr John Bryce at a time when cobwebs require sweeping away. Of late yoars the colony has not been fortunate in its representation 1 , but the Wairarapa has been extremely lucky in having had for its members two thoroughly honest find trustworthy men like Messrs Beethan ' and Buchanan. .Mr Buchanan has even aspecial claim to our regard as a resident settler, who year by year is accomplishing with characteristic industry, the work ' which others prate about yjz., the fostering of these local industries which are specially adapted to the requirements of the colony. His efforts on behalf of our: frozen meat aQd dairy factory industries have been, of barked service to all classes in the community. It is extremely satisfactory;jto fiad that the settlers of the

Ltfwer Valley are alive to the worth of their representative, and are alto-, gethor unlikely to exchange him even for that; wary old soldier who desires to supplant liiffl. Mr Buchanan has done honor to the South Wairarripa constit-. liency hy his past services in the Assembly and in the interests of the colony, and of a district of it which he has so largely benefitted, we hope to see him, retain, for manyyears to come a position which he so ably fills,
