The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council takes place this evening. Lovers of dancing are reminded of the extended programme this evening at the Masterton Drill Shed. On Monday last at Eketahuna, John Tuck, of the Eketahuna Hotel, was fined 20s and 143 costs for a breach of the Licensing Act. Tho conviction was endorsed on his license.
Mr C. Pharazyn \b announced to lecture in St Matthew's schoolroom, Masterton, on Friday evening, 22nd inst, the subject boing " What 1 have seen in Europb," We remind our readors of the Borvico of song " Reclaimed," which takes place this evening in the Temperance Hall, Masterton, Tho Rev. Mr Fulton takes the Chair, and tho Kev. Mr Buttle acts ascender,

Henderson, Watchmaker and Jeweller, Queen-St. Masterton, announces the arrival of a new supply of watches, clocks, jowellery, etc. He also intimates that all work entrusted to him will be executed as lowest tvado prices, Tho following from a Melbourne paper dated; June 11th, will show (hat New Zealand is not alono in feeling the depression :—To show how deep and widespread the distress in Melbourne is, it may be mentioned that one day this week the Gas Committee advertised for a man to brick up a ceiling, merely a few hours work. One hunprod and twenty seven men applied for the job." And Melbourne is the Paradise which is now being held up as-our example by the protectionist cranks. .
A special meeting of the Mauricevillo Road Board was held on Saturday last. Present: William Jessen, (Chairman) C. Forshery, G. Gunderson, J. Bannister and fl. W. Jackson. The minutos of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The following tenders were received for. collecting tolls at the Mauricevillo Tollgate, VV. Vile 45 per cent commission, &. Franklin Sty per cent. Franklin's tender was accepted. Kesolved that all resident ratepayers be, on application to the chairman of the Board, supplied with a free pass for. the. Mauricoville tollgate' and in case of anybody losing their pass'a fresh one be issued at a -chargeof Is; resolved that the chairman call tenders for the old planks from the bridges' and platforms. The meeting tho adjourned,

The adjourned annual meeting of tho Masterton Horticultural Society was held last evening, The balance sheet was read and adopted. The auditor, Mr W, M. lOasthope, reported having audited the accounts, and complimented the Society generally upon its status, Mr J. Brown was appointed secretary in place of Mr Halhaway resigned.' The report of the committee appointed to revise the catalogue was submitted, and excited considerable discussion. The most important alterations were the substitution of an "All Comers" clas3 in place of the professional gardeners class, and in placo of a single and double being shown together in Zoualo Pelargoniums, Petunias; Fuchsias, etc., it will stand thebesc single or bsst double Mr Papworth proposed the introduction of a children's class for children under 15 years of age, tho age,to be certified to by parents or sohoolmas-' ter. Aftes some little discussion . this was agroed'upon. The Secretary was instructed to get 500 catalogues printed at once. How. to save money—" Buy in the cheopes market."
