The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, JULY 8, 1887. THE THESE TAILED GOVERNMENT.

Among the Turks the Beglerbeg, or "prince of princes," is distinguished by the standard borne before him adorned by three horse-tails, He is called the Three-tailed Bashaw. The StoutBallance Government, though pretending to be the only true and genuiue Democrats, are also Three-tailed Bashaws. True, at present they have no Standards tarried before them—that will come when tbey have reduced us to abject humility—but they own three individuals who symbolize precisely the same thing—irresponsible power and brutal violence to opponents. Up to quite recently, Messrs Stout and Ballance were, to pursue the simile, only Bashaws of One-tail. That tail consisted of Mr Dargaville, who is politically famous among other things for having been convicted of a series of deliberate ram-statftments uttered in face of an immense audience assembled at Auckland last August, Last session Mr Dargaville acted in the House as the Government Mohawk and Slubber-degullion (the word is Hudibrastic) generally. HU duties—and he performed them as faithfully as an unfaithful temperamont would permit—were to applaud to the echo any particularly tall Ministerial statement, and interrupt by boisterous laughter and inßulling interjections Sir George Grey or other prominent members of the Opposition. Mr Dargaville is the small-beer wit and funny-man of the Government. I Unfortunately, his usefulness was somewhat marred by Mr Fergus, who frequently gave him decisive lessons in decency. Mr Dargaville now poses as a Laud Rationalizer, a patriotic Democrat, and the" working man's friend," notwithstanding ho owns quite a territory up North, .where he. aots the tyrannical Bashaw on his own account. However, the working men of Auckland have now ciphered this patriot, and had he sought re-election for Auckland West the only result would have been an immense demand in that district for defunct felines. He has wisely gone elsewhere to deceive working men who ionot know him. As Dargavillo's return for any district is doubtful, the Government had to seek a second Jail. Their choice foil upon that;distinguished " Democrat" Mr John Lundon, who is too notorious to need description, Mr John Lundon acts Jonothan to Mr John Balance's David—and "the soul of Jonathan is knit with the

soul of David." Mr Lunclon devotes :•.- an elegaafc leisure to the ; gratuitous (1) ' direction of homestead settlements the ' lands department generally, and, as he ■■ is wanted' to act tiiil 'ho. 2 in'the j House, he.and; ilr 'Baltanco recently combined business with -'pleasure. anil toured together through the Bay ..of Islands.. There Mr. L'undon pointed ( out to bis. affectionate tomrade the ."'smiling and '.-. happy homesteads" which, exist .in/ Mr. *Xuudori's vivid. ( Celtic imaginatidnj'and Mr'Ballance i spoke a gushing but authoritative word i on Mr Lundon's behalf to the humble hemeatead-holders,: For this amiable arrangement a sympathetic country j pays, Now there is no nonsense about ' MrLundon. He is a different, man- ' tier of tail from Mr Dargaville, : The latter is an excellent biistinadoer' of - old and feeble men, and a fair stonewaller, but thsre his functions cease, ' Mr John Lundon, on the contrary, is if we may so describe it, considerably "on the shoot." Ho lately invited some persons in Auckland who differed from him regarding die beauty and glory of the homestead scheme ' to attend a meeting and briug their fiveshooters with.tliem/ and a meek invite to this effect appealed in a Government advertisement below Her Majesty's royal a'rmsi . Mr Lundon is therefore an invaluable supporter; middle-aged opposition'members of sedentary habits and who are not "quick on the draw" will be too wise to provoke, by political- contradiction the ire of so redoubtable a shootist, and should Mr Lundon. in the heat of debate, put his hand near tjie pistol pocket of his pantaloons, no doubt the Speaker and..Opposition will promptly duck behind their respective benches and meekly remain there until Mr Lundon has corpsed his victim. It will be almost as exciting as the "far Wild West of America." Mr John Lundon and his revolver and Mr Dargaville with his gorgeous guffaw should be sufficient to keep any Government in power. But theso Bashaws hayo a third string to their bow, or rather a third tail to their gonfalon—Mr A. W, Hogg who will contest the Wairarapa in the Stout-Ballance-Dargaville-Lun-dou interest. Now, Mr Hogg is neither funny nor ferocious—in a physical sense, He has neither the weakling wit of Mr Dargaville nor the ' neat hand on a trigger ot Mr Jphn Lundon, Nevertheless we are certain ho will prove an invaluable assistant to a Government that desires limitless power under the fair name of ■ Liberty, , and destruction under' the watchword , of Democracy. Mr Hogg's knowledge i : innate and acquired —of natural. ■ history lias supplied him with tho most 1 nniquo stock of epithets connected with the brute creation possessed by any man in New Zealand aud these" ha; ; has [ already placed at the disposal of the . Government. Should bo he returned - ho will thus be able to supplement Mr 1 Dargavillc's limited vocabulary, to ' supply Mr Liiudon'B.shooling-irqn.w'ith j bullets, and give a more. life-Jib tone", to Sir Robert Stout's laugh of tho "an-' thropomorphous ape," : ;A; new era is , dawning upon our history, not precisely i a golden age, • but an epoch of foul ' abuse, knuckle-dusters and shot-guns.
