The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 1887. A SIMPLE CREED.
Mr Bunny's political creed is said to be a simple one, and we can well believe inits " sweet simplicity," judging by his speech on Monday evening last. He jauntily brushed on one side the political leaders of the colony, he waved away all debts and difficulties, and gave his simple hearers one simple remedy for all the political ills that colonial flesh is heir to, and that simple remedy is Bunny. This always was his creed, and we notice that he is still true to self. The speech from one end to the other was a coarse bid to catch the popular vote, and was liter-' ally studded with gag and claptrap. In marked contrast to this was Mr G. j Beetham'sspeech last evening; less 1 brilliant,-, no doubt., from a mere oratorical standpoint,'but bearing the unmistakeable ring of sincerity and truth. "Mr Bunny, when touching upon a public question, seems to be saying " How will this suit me ?" but Mf.Beetham.on each and every point, appears to be asking, himself " flow will this suit the colony ?" It is no wonder that of these two experienced parliamentarians, who once were colleagues, it is thought that the younger will have a portfolio in the next Ministry which may be formed, and that the other will never regain • the position .which he once held. An untried man may believe, and venture to imply that if he be returned to Parliament' he will do wonders, but one who has been tried and has failed ought not to "blow." The present Ministry have loaded Mr Bunny with favors, they have done more for him than any other Ministry for the past thirty years. Why, therefore, does he not openly avow himself as their supporter, and fight their battles under their, colors? He thinks, probably, that he will get more yote3 by posing as an independent candidate. He sacrifices his benefactors on the altar of Self
