The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, JULY 5, 1887. THE NEW ELECTORATES.
The new electorates are proclaimed, and, as anticipated, Wairarapa North has been fused in the melting pot and re-cast to form two new districts, the 'Masterton and the Woodville electorates, Half of our old dominion is gone, and with regret we witness the departure from our electoral borders of the settlers north of Mauriceville. Eketahuna, Ahredtqn, and Pahiatua residents are now in the Woodville district, arid we sincerely trust that they will do their duty to the colony arid to themselves by returning a trustworthy candidate as their representative in Parliament, We feel ,a keen interest in the choice of electorates other than our brand new Masterton one. We shall be ill satisfied, even though we win the fight in the home district, if to the north and to the south of us Ministerial candidates carry the day. We are not afraid!. The cause of retrenchment and political morality.for which we contend must win in the coming elections, even though the Government bquip a legion of new J.P.'s to fight their elections ior them, The town of Masterton comes well to the front in the fall of the old Wairarapa North electorate, and no doubt in' a few years time it will be populous enough to.return a member without the aid of a country district. We are, however, in no hurry to see town and country j severed in our political representation. The proclamation of yesterday is the signal to the constituencies to let slip, "the dogs of war" The fitful firing up till now has been but the prelude to the battle, an affair of outposts proceeding a general engagement which promises to be one of the most exciting and hard fought politioal contests in the Colony. The time has arrived when the Vogelean Shibboleths which for so many years have led us from paths'of safety into, troublesome and dangerous ways I should be discarded, of
the Maji'oian wliioh was to make 'us j all riolil'turns put to be a failure and a
disappointment. "We are disenohduted and Will listen no. longer' to the=incantations which once deluded us. Wo are no longer worshippers'''of the goldencalfjwhicliwe'oiice;vainly imaginedto be the offspring, of our public" woflis cow/ "The- -•pestion : l#|cJi. is j' ; now; ".specially interesting;, the M|sterton Electorate. is;, "- Who
isf to be- our new . candidatei" Mr McGai'dle. it is pretty certain, \vill"' stand for Woodville, and who will come forward to fill his shoes. The Government, who are .watching every electoral district as cats watch mice, will not let" Mr George Beethatfrhave a walk over, though they would, if they are not strong enough to carry the sea-, sooner see Mr Beetham re-
turned than any other person, simply because he has never been a factious opponent of the Government. It goes without saying that the Government would as soon see his Satanic Majesty elected as Mr. Hawkins, and it follows that someone will be brought forward to fight under the Ministerial flag— We do not know exactly what this flag is, but it is probably an ass in a lion's skin roaring for protection.—A fortnight ago we intimated that Messrs Hogg and Papworth were likely to become candidates for tho Liberal party, and we see no reason to change
the opinion then, expressed. Ifc-.is probable that the Ministry will seleot Mr Hogg as their champion, and Mr Papworth, if he stands at all, will do so atthe instigation of his friends, and not by command. Not only in this but in most of the electorates of the Colony there appears to be at the present time a plethora of candidates, but
before the day ef polling comes, the list of aspirants' for political honors will be thinned and the voting will be divided between the recognised Opposition and Ministerial candidates. ..
