FOOTBALL
JUNIOR CUP MATCH,
The third heat for the Junior Cup of the Wairarapa Union came off on the Maßterton Club ground on Saturday last between the Te Ore Ore Club (Maori) and the second fifteen of the Masterton Club. The latter were the winners of the Cup last year, and as each Club had already scored a win this year, more than usual interest was centred in the contest, the adjoining paddook being lined with buggies, containing numerous lady partisans of the dusky warriors, The usual spells of fovty-fivo minutes each were played, with Messrs Oox and Felling umpiring, and Mr W. Hirsohberg referee. Masterton kicked off, which gave Rangi 'an opportunity for, putting in a good ruu, resulting in a scrimmage on the Masterton side of the centre flag, Bunny finished up a ran by going- into toiich near the Masterton twenty-five. Tito game now became very, slow, owing to the forwards dropping on the ball The Maories, by vigorous forward play, carried the leather opposite the Masterton goal, where some very determined play took place, ending in Ellers potting a goal, from a neat pass out, amid tremendous cheering from the occupants of the buggies..' The kick out was the signal for some good forward play,J.Bauaister coming through the scrimmages time after time, but the centre baok play of Ellers seemed an impassable barrier. 11. Perry marked from a knock on, and gained ground by kicking into touoli. Simeon seemed a tower of strength among the native forwards, and would carry the ball along, with several of tbe opposing team hanging to bim like barnacles, Bunny made a nice rim but'was grasfced by Miller, who played' a dashing wing game. Both sides obtained free kicks through offside play,, which was the , rule, rather than the exception, O'Connor gained ' ground l by a dribble, ' and E. ; Welch put in.a good run, whioh brought the play to the Maories twenty-five, A good rush carried the •play towards the.Masterton line, wherf Ellers made another pot for goal and Masterton was [forced down, Soot
after thei kick out, the play returned to the Masterton quarters, which was relieved/ by a free tick for off side play. Haif time .was shortly after called, ; being; near the centre. Score, Te Ore Ore 3 points', Masterton nil. A. Thompson- doing good runs, which were followod by R. Thompson finishing n rim near the Te Ore Ore line. Scrimmages on the line ensued, which gave both aides some very heavy work, the line being relieved by Ellets marking and kicking up the field. .-It. was, however, Boon' returned, and some interesting play took, place in front of the goal, (he Maori forwards eventually forcing their opponents back to their twenty-five. Ngature but in a dashing, run, which the Maoris backed up by a good rush, ending in August securing a try near the corner flag; Murray took the kick, and placed an undeniable goal, the kiok being splendidly judged. The kick off was followed by another To Ore Ore rush, scrimmages took plaoein Masterton's twenty-five, a forOodow'n resulting from a long kwk. Miller caiuo off with a good lira,
responded; to ,by the forwards, and Te Ore Ore was forced down. The natives followed up . their kick out and were soou iu scrimmage at 'Masterton twenty-fivej and the hope of.the red, yellow, and black sank below.zero at tho vigorous attack of their opponents. The play gradually approached the covoted.lme, whan Kara by a dash
got over and-placed another try to the score. The placej'though a'good one, was unsuccessful. Time was then called, the score standing, Te Oro Ore 7 points, Mftstertou.iiil, The result of' the game was not a great surprise, as the winners were known to be in good practice/although they were four short of thoir best team. The game can fairly be said to have boon won by Captain Ellers, who kept his team going -the whole time, besides working like ut demonJiimself. The losers played well, but lacked that great motor .to success
—practice. O'Connor handled jiis team will, but was greatly overmatched. E. and F. Welch, Miller, J. Bannister, and A. Thompson played a dashing game, while the s,marf play of H. Perry, and the running of R, Thompson deserve special mention. The latter played a much Bteadier. game than usual, the absonce of , blind kicking being noticeable' in his ploy. -
