THE WELLINGTON AND MANAWATU RAILWAY CO.'S LAND SALE.

The third sale of land belonging to . the Wellington-Manawatu' Railway Company, situated in tho vicinity of the railway, was commenced on Friday afternoon' by Messrs- T. Kennedy Macdonald & Co. at their ' auction rooms, Wellington, and ..was aMded by between 500 and 630 •persons eager to secure township-or ■. agricultural holdings. The buyers were for the most part country settlers and practical farmers hailing from various parts of the colony, including Nelson, Canterbury, Foxtou, Palmerstou North, and Wairarapa, The land announced to be offered is situated in Shanuon and Tbkomaru, and- comprised township, suburban, and agri- ■ cultural and pastoral areas. Mr Mwdouald first proceeded with the agricultural and pastoral sections in Shannon, and afterwards offered the township sections, when.-the sale was - postponed until 10 o'clock on Saturday morning. The, bidding was spirited all through, and the agricultural land averaged £2 4s 3d per acre, and the township sections £4B per acre. The first quarter acre township section was started at £5, and Jives eventually knocked down at £72. S —at the rate of £2BB per acre, Forty nine sections of.agricultural laud at Kereru and Shannon, containing 8985 acres, realised an average of £2 4s 8d per aero, the salo of these sections amounting to £881415s lid. In the township of Shannon 149 sections •were disposed of, containing 46a lr 27p, realising an ayerage of £4B per aere,-the total amount being £2210, 4he grand total of tho day's sale being £II,OBO 15b lid. The sale was continued on Saturday, when three-fourths of the suburban sections in connection with the townships of Shannon and Tokomaru, were disposed of, the prices realised . being at'the rate of from £8 to £5 per acre. The sections in the township of Tdkdmaru were withdrawn, and will not be offered for sale until the spring by which timo tho bueh will have been felled.
