MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in ,tho. Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present-His Worship the Mayor, and Cra. J. Muir. W. Perry, T, and E. Cliamborlain, Elkins, Gapper, Parsons, Cullen, Papworth, Carman, and Macara The minutes of tho previous meeting were read and confirmed, Correspondence outwards was read, but, was of little importance, Correspondence inwards From tho Wellington United District Aid Board re subsidies, and demanding £IOO 4a 9d • also intimating that the claim of £25 refund made on aocount of aid given to tho North Wairarapa Benevolent Society cuuld not bo en'ortained. With reference to the demand for lilOO 4s Oil, tho Clerk was instructed to write and draw tho attention of the Board to requirements of Act, in Clause 24, and asking for furtkor information. His Worship montioned that this stop would only delay the matter, as they would certainly have to find tho amount. From the Mastcrton Hospital Trustees re donation to - that institution, and informing tho Council that Mr Heron would wait on them, and explain matters in connection therewith.
Permission having been granted for Mr Heron to speak, that eentloman Btatcd that tho Trustees had decided to aßk the District Board not to lovy a rate until tho Trustees saw whether tho Local Bodies would contribute. So far aa tho Trustees could sco a grant of £25 would bo ample The Council could roly ou any monies given in this direction would be economically expended. Personally, ho considered L 25 out of proportion, Becin? that only LRO had been asked from tho North County Council. The Trustees would not draw tho amount | unless tho monoy was really required. Ho thought that if tho Council voted from Ll2 to Lls, it would meet all requirements. His Worahip explained at some length the action takon by the Wairarapa District Aid Board in connection with claims mado by Masterton Hospital Trustees and moved that a vote of £ls be made towards tho Masterton Hospital Trustees, and that this sum was in lieu of any claim they may make. ■ CrT. Chamberlain seconded the resolution which was carried. A letter was read froii Mr J. W. Lang, re renewal of lease, and accepting same. It was decided to take the necessary stops to give effect to Mr Lang|s application. From Treasury advising payment of monies collected by the It.M, Court From Lady Jorvois, re celebrating the Queen's Jubilee, and asking the Council to arrango for a meeting of tho Ladies of Masterton to form a fund to bo called the " Queens fund." Tho money so raised to bo oxponded in affording relief to women m distress in now Zealand, A long discussion ensued as to whether any action should be takon, which resulted m a resolution being carried to the effect "That tlie matter bo laid before,the ladies of Mastorton, and that to save expense they have tho free use of the Council Chambers to hold moetings in." From Mr E. Jones, Secretary of the Jubilee Colebratiou Committee, asking permission to erect four triumphial arches in Queen-etreet. Jt was resolved that pormißsion bo given, but tho work would havo to be dono under tho supervision of Cr Gapper, Chairman of-the Works Committee. From same, enclosing printed particulars of tho celebration. Whilst on this mattor, His Worship oxpressed the opinion that Mr Phillips, the originator of. the celebration, deserved the thanks of tho Borough for taking initiatory stops in thiß mattor. His Worship moved "That Tuesday, 21st inst., bo proclaimed a public holiday." Seconded by Or Panons and carried, From Mr G, Arnold, applying for any brickwork in connection with the gas works, and intimating that as ho had done provious work to the satisfaction of the Engineer, he thought he was entitled to saini). Finding that to be the case he was quito prepared to withdraw it and loavo the tor in tho hands of tho Fire Brigade Cora* ; • mittee. The motion was thon withdrawn. ..
