The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 1887. THE MINISTERIAL CANDIDATE FOR WAIRARAPA NORTH.
Mn W. W, McCuidle, the Ministerial candidate for Wairarapa North, addresses a public meeting in Masterton on Monday evening next. It is quite, however, on the cards tiiat Mr McCardle may not retain his present position as Ministerial candidate for this electorate. There is still a possibility of aWoodville electorate being constituted, which may include the bush settlements of this district, and if so, it would be pretty certain that Mr McOardlo would contest the up-country electorate. This would leave this field to Mr Beetharn and Mr Hawkins, but the withdrawal of Mr McCardle Would be the signal for somo other member of his party to take his place in the Wairarapa North contest, and either Mr D. S. Papworth or Mr A. W. Hogg might bo expected to come forward, Of course the bush settlements are not at all certain to bo transferred to Woodville, but the latest and most reliable rumors from the Empire city .are favorable to the supposition. Mr McCardle is likely to be well received on Monday evening next, He fought tho last election with so much pluck and ability that he gained the respect of his political opponents and fully justified the confidence reposed in him by his own party. Everyone will give him credit for an earnest desire to advance the fortunes and interests of bush settlors, and if we fail at all times to agree with the methods by which he seeks to gain his ends, if we cannot share the sanguine views which he indulges in of the unlimited prosperity and progress of the new settlements we can at least admire tho enthusiasm with which he devotes himself to the, work of colonisation. Since he last addressed us three years ago the settlements in the bush districts have advanced very rapidly. The actual settlement'; has been great, the nominal settlement still greater. Mr MoOardle will probably have no difficulty in persuading his hearers on
Monday evening next that a wido and vigorous growth of settlement has been accomplished. No doubt at the present time a good ileal of depression is experienced, but general and local public works are still employing several hundreds of workers, and while this is tho case the district will keep its head above water. While many settlers in the bush districts have during the last three years laid on sound foundations a future competency, others hare started upon conditions which in the opinion of many are unfavorable to success. Still, there has been a large percentage of settlement of a highly satisfactory character, and for this Mr McCardle can justly take credit. He may almost be regarded as the founder and chief promoter of the Bush settlements,
