The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, MAY 21, 1887. FREE FROM SCAB.

e Tibs' Colony is at last, reported to be free from scab, and however ranch it may be regretted that so many' long I years have been required to bring ' about this fortunate condition, all ■ interested in our staple product will congratulate themselves that it has at last been accomplished. Tho Hon. j Mr Buckloy, as Colonial Secretary, is Minister of Sheep for this colony, and has been felicitated on the issue of thf last clean certificate. Wo aro quite ready to join in according to hipi his duo meed of praise for the result which '; hasboen secured, and sincerely trust that it will not be an evanescent triumph. There are a few dangerous spots in the Colony, where: scab maj possibly re-appear, and the utmost vigilance will still be necessary tc guard them. One of fcheso weal places is the Wharearaa, and w( regret to learn that there is sonu danger of relaxed vigilance in thii locality. It is stated that Mr Join Drummond, now in charge there, i; under orders to.- proceed to anothe: part of the Colony If this is the case the Department is displaying a s'erioui error in judgment. Mr Drunimoni was sent to the Whareama as apickei man to clean a difficult district, ii which officers in the department hai been unsuccessful. The expectations formed of. Mr Drammond's energ; and skill, have been realized, and hi has done his work. All the good h has done, howovor, may be throw away if another officer, without hi special experience and aptitude, take his place. Many years ago, Mi Drummond was in charge of thi Whareama district, and' represse< soab in it, He was then trans ferred to Wairarapa South auc Whareama district shortly became more infected than ever. It would b a great pity if history were allowet to repeat itsolf in this matter. Ex perienco in this district favors tlii assumption that Mr Drummond ou clean a district thoroughly, and keej it free from infection. He is therefor specially fitted for a post of dange like the Whareama, and to take hin from it and placo him in another .dis triot whore there is merely routin duties to transact, is most unwise We understand that changes' are hot being madoin the sheep department with a view to reducing its cost, am no every encouragement shouli be given to Ministers in this dire'

tion, but it is no economy '/.to'reduce', in any way the cost, of supervision at (langer'poihts like the Wharoaraa (lis-: trioti ,We trust tho Gbverninerit reconsider their; cleoision to transfer' Mr prumnioiid., us by/depriving: them-' .selves of liisierv]ces-mtlie'\Vhareama. they talte a serious'-risk of liaVing to cancel the ..'clean certificate of'wliich no doubt they are justly-proud.
