OHANGA ROAD DISTRICT.
. At'tbe first annual meeting of tho ratepayers convened by advertisement in accordance .witli the Road Uoard aot, Miat'OhMiga','on Wednesday, the' 4thi in^r..,' thfc. chairmafi, Mr, J.' 0* Cox/ '■' addressed these present. as follows : " : , Gentlemen, doubtless 1 you ate aware the,new Board,' consisting, of Messrs Handyside, Mason, Baker, Liverton •and myself, were duly" elected:on:the , 12th'January. Since that eleotion we ' '.h'av'e'heldfour meetingsat'the'residence ,of Mr Handyside, which was kindly '' placed at our disposal, The attendances have been aa follows; Mason 1, Handy-- • side 2, : Bakor 3, Liverton 4, Cox 4. Vourßoaul have arranged to build a , Mnijll office; to cost about 430,, near the ' junction at Olianga, considering' that flpot to be as near as possible the centre of the district. On adjusting , the acco'unts'botwcen this and tho parent Board, lam glad to lie able to state that they were puiiec'lly satisfactory, The credit due to old numbel"6, was £2os : j tomuiibei-7, J5195. ; It is rather to be regretted tho new district could not have been continued in wards. This being:'so, I'would recommend (tieeiiit; 'okliiumlier7? isa ; much larger contributor than number C)..tb.it .there should be a separate account, so that tacb division should have all the rate, or as near aapossible, spent in tho dis- " tric't inWli'ich-it is raised. A permauerit. man has been put on the Akitio division.. My own opinion is, it is advisable that' two should be kept; then not only ':. repairs, but a system of other improvements could bo carried on. At the last meeting of the Board,-held on the 31st Murch, it was arranged that the old Board should meet for. the last time yesterday, when a statement I was. supposed to give the ratepayers today might be agreed to, This meeting fell . through for want of a quorum ; 1 have, therefore, to address you as I best can, I may state at the uouiinaticn on the 27th May, Messrs Liverton aud Baker were re-elected without opposition. It was also arranged that Mr Handyside aud myself should formadeputalion to wait upon tho County Council to urge tho advisability of this large district having some representation, also in the meantime to reliove this district as far as was consistent from so large a rate ait hitherto. It-was felt the greater-•'part-of nil the rates were spent in the • lower part of the- district, while our outlet was ii Custlepoiul. In accord •- • ance with that resolution,. I attended the Council on the 12th April; when a committee prepared- a. report re distribution of Hidings. I also attended the Council held next day, when it was Halved that tho old Riding should bo divided -and ono 3eat given to each. I teel that wbeu tho time. comes'the Council will willingly Aah into consideration the rate question also. ; In a " district like this, where litopayei'S are ' liviug so far apart, it might not beoufc of place to say a word about a new County road spoken of by soino, viz;; via Tinui Valley across the ranges-to Obauga. .No doubt this would open up tho interior, but if would cost a very largeamouut to do it, and.in-my opinion could not be carried out for miiny years to come, .however much it may'be desired,
