[united press association] HOUSE OP REPRESENTATIVES. Toesdav, May. 10th. The House met at 2.30 p.m. Replying to questions, it was stated that there' was no objection to put a moderate' sum on the estimates for testing rich auriferous and argontiferous deposits in the colony. i, That it would not be fair to other applicants to grant £IOO for testing Williams' Rabbit Exterminator. That the Government had no objection to provide for the enrolment and incor. poration of Volunteer Fire Brigades, but they had no means of providing capitation allowance, and would leave that for local bodies. That the Waitaki High School would take moans to provido for higher education of girls at Oamaru. That the proposal could bo mado this sessioii to amend the Land Act, 1885, so as to enable holders of pastoral deferredfiayment settlements to exchange such icenses for leases of small grazinp runs. A lengthy discussion followed on the Bill, in which Messrs Korr, Russell, Levastam, Wakefield, Pearson, Samuel, Scobie, McKenzie and Rolleston spoko on the whole question of higher education. Sir Roborfc Stout said it was most unfair to deny to Wellington what had been given to othor districts, and pointed out that the New Zealand University had obtainod £3OOO and the Auckland College £4OOO. Ha was amazed to hear an amendment of this kind proposed by a Southern 1 member and it looked very like provincial jealousy. Ho claimed that this University was established for poor men's sous and not for rich men's sons, and ho would like to see both Hjgli Schools and Universities altogether free,
The debate was interrupted by the 5.30 adjournment
