ROAD BOARD ADMINISTRATION

In response ~tp a circular sent by Mr J. Stuckey convening a meeting to_ take into consideration the future administration of Road Board, affairs in this district,'tha following gentlemen were- present at the Club Hotel on Saturday' 8.. Mawley, James McKay, A. Stewart, T;i Brown, J. Ross, R, Cameron, D. MoEenzie, A. .W...Caw,. J.. .Bennett, J. lorns. Brown Hunt, R. Hare,. J. Drummond, and E. M. D. Whatman. Mr Stuckey occupied tbe chair and read comparative statements of the expenses incurred in administering several Road Boards in the Wairarapa, showing that the Masterton Road Board was most excessive in its expenditure. He argued that the Te Ore Ore and adjacent properties were kind of golden eggs to the Masterton Road Board owing to their" valuations being so high, and there was no work required to be dono there,.-as the properties were served by tho County Road. This moant that they had to pay a double tax, and their money was spent elsewhere. If a district was defined of the localities interested, a new Road Board could bo formed which would give them an opportunity of .spending their own rates, either in improvements or in paying off the money borrowed under the .Roads and Bridges Construction Act, where, the money had been borrowed in-a locality, und.no work was now required to bo done there. Mr Dags;, iu defending the working of tho Masterton Road Board, pointed out that the proposed new Board would find themselves man awkward position if the County Council threw the maintainance of the County: roads on them.

It was resolved that a committee be appointed to draw up a petition and define the boundaries of the propoand. new Road district to present to the next meeting of tlio Worth County Council, The meeting then adjourned till Saturday, May 7th, to receive the committee's report.
