Employment of Females and Olheii. Amendment Bill.—This Bill, which is introduced by the Premier, atoetids the definitions of sections 2 of '.the previous Act in that "child" mbahs a boy or girl between the ages of 12 and 14, " female," any person of the female sex of or above the age of 14, and "young person," a boy between the ages of 14 and 18. Sections-4, :5, and 6 are repealed, and in lieu tiiereof.it is enacted as follows: person shall be employed in any factoryi under the age of 12 years, (2i) No person shall employ any young person in any factory for more than eight and & half hours in any one iday, nor for; more than. 48 hours! in any one [week;, Subject as aforesaid and to the provisions of the said Act as to meals, a young person may be employed after the hour of six in the afternoon, but in any aush case he shall not be employed during auy part of the twelve ibours preceding or succeeding the period of employment: Provided , always that any Resident Magißtrato or Inspector in a district ma;], in cases of ■ emergency, allow f'oung persons to 'work overtime. (3). No person shall employ in any factory any female or child at'any, time between the hours of six in the afternoon and eight in the morning, or for more than eight hours in' any one day'. (5). Every female, young person or child employed in any factory shall have holiday—fa) On Sunday; (b) without lossof wages, on New Year's day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas Day, and any other day set apart as a public liojiday by the Governor, and on Saturday afternoon from'two o'clock, . The Ac.fc also enacts that sitting accomodation must be provided'for saleswomen; that any factory may be inspected at any, time, with penalty for obstructing such inspection, It repeals the previous Amendment Act of 1881, and it is expressly stated that nothing in the Act applies to butter and cheese factories.
