It is almost a surprise to us to find the Wairarapaaud East Coast Pastoral Society losing simultaneously iv President who-bas- done so much for ita interests as Mr Buchanan, and aSecretary who has served it diligently and faithfully in the person of Mr Wolters, Their successors may, as new brooms, do all that 'men may accomplish, but they will have to work very hard to maintainthe prestige which their predecessors have enjoyed. Whatever the future of the South Wairnrapa Association may be, its past success is in a great measure due to the late president and the late secretary. Still, Mr H, ft. Bunny, the new president, is an excellent choice, He is a capable and indefatigable settler, ffho promises to take front rank some day amongst the public men of this district. The interests of the Sooiety are safe in his hands,

A resident in Masterton was fined this morning for polluting the Waipoua river. We are pleased to notice that the Resident Magistrate in this town takes up the position that our local stream shall not be contaminated with impunity. We wish the Borough, Council was equally anxious to maintain its purity. Water which poisons fish must be detrimental to the health of the community, and it is water of this kind which is allowed to fid.w through the borough; '
