Goschen, j Chancellor- of ..thej Ex.chetquer, de--' | livored his Budget Statement in the ( House of Commons to-day, It an- \ nounced that the surplus from last i year was £776,000, .The.estimated J revenue' for the current year is £91,155,000' and the estimated ex- \ penditure £90,180,000. By various ' changes ill the stamp duties, by taxing debentures in a similar way to preference and ordinary shares, and by remodelling the system of redemption of the National Debt, the Chancellor obtained an estimated surplus of £2,700,000. The Income Tax will be reduced by one penny (from 8d to 7d); the duty on tobacco wil be reduced by 4d per lb, and a tight reduction will be made in the tax on marine insurance policies, By these reductions the estimated surplus will be reduced to £BOO,OOO. The Treasury will pay off a credit of £11,000,000 this year and reserve local loans from the Budget, at the same time creating special stock to tho amount of £37,000,000 for local loans. Mr Goschen expressed a hope that largo reductions would be effected in naval charges, and especially for shipbuilding,, next year, and concluded by stating that there were strong evidences that trade in the United Kingdom was greatly improved.
