THE MONEY MARKET. ' Messrs Chas, Pownall and Co, Mortgage Agents, "Wellington, report the money market, so far as amounts offering for mortgage investments, has collapsed, and tho largo applications '.from all parts of the colony are therefore not negotiable, Quotations for tho rate of interest are equally unreliable, 7s, 8, and even 9 per cent being demanded under pressure tor the few small sums forthcoming. In tho London/market the value of money has gone down to Bank of England rate—and, commercially, l\ per cent. Thero is no. doubt the state of uncertainty as to ' our pres'ent position has caused a feeling of distrust, naturally, for the moment, reacting upon this colony, which, however, the firm position of the wool market may tend to alleviate. • PRODUCE PRICES. • The wholesale prices of produce in Masterton at this date are as-follows:—Fresh butter, lOd to lid ; eggs, Is u'd; Retail oats, 2s 4d; cheese, (idto7d; potatoes, 4s 3d | barley, 3s 3d,
