On the report of the recent deputation to tho' Minister of "Public Works being road Or McCardle, as one of the deputation stated that tlio Minister informed them that very little was'' left over from the tolh, after paying the collectors wages! '• At present the Government wore repairing the. bridge, and the Minister further informed thorn that ho had recently paid a visit down South and lound sevoral bridges that: had been handed oyer to the local bodies'iira bad state of; repair, . Or Meredith considered that the portion of the report which stated " That some of the ■ bodies interested wished to raise money on .the Gorge road to spend elsewhere" was a serious charge.

Cr McCardle said.there was. a feeling among the other bodies that the North County Council wished to raise money there to spend elsewhere.

Or Hawkins said it was usual to impute bad motives to the North Council. SLAUGHTER HOUSES.. Mr Collier's application for a license, for slaughtering caused some discussion, which revealed the fact that there wero no bye-laws on the subject. It was resolved " That, Crs." Mackay, Beetham, and Dagg be a committee to examine tho site of the slaughterhouse, and ascertain if there is anything objectionable to the neighbors. The same committee were also appointed to draw, up bye-laws for the regulation of slaughter houses in the County." GORGE TOLL CONFERENCE. Cr Boetbam, .speaking on tlio application from the-Waipawa County for a conference, said that h thought Cr McCardlo could do all that tho Council required at tho meeting. Ho considered tho County was forced into the liability through tho action of the Government, end that 'the Waipawa and Manawatu wero.really, the only bodios directly interested. ■ Ho arguod that as the Government had'.forced the oxpenso on thorn, they slioiild be placed in exactly the same position as they woroboforo the toll was proposed. He moved that Cr McCardle tlio representative of the North County Council at the proposed' conference,-.' Cr Meredith advocated, that the boundaries be readjusted so. as to give Waipawa County a slice off' tho North County, so as to repay them for maintaining' the road. Cr McCardle said he would not bo a party to having a portion of tho county taken off as suggested, as it would include about a. quarter of the Mangatainoka special settlement, the settlors of whom had no interest whatever, in the Gorge road. He stated that the Pahiatua settlers never/used the Gorge road, but all their traffic went over the Napior or' Masterton roads, the former route bringing goods from Wellington by steamer and rail about 7.8 6d.a ton cheaper than by the latter route. Cr -Meredith moved "That tho Manawatu and Waipawa County County Councils be informed that if ' they will take over the Gorge Road, and pay tho expenses the North County:has been put to, they will take off the toll gateihere, : and that tho gate must remain until the boundaries have been re-defined, to which this Council will offer no objection, the expense of which to be borne by the Manawatu and Waipawa counties." Seconded by Cr Dagg and parried. '■',' Or McCardle was then appointed as the representative at the conference, CONVERSIONS, The Eketahuna - Alfredton, and

Cr Hawkins in roferririg to the letter from the' Clerk of thQ South" County - Council,; pointed out that the; Council had only/to mbve:that a-.siuri of £6O paid by the Council to the North Wairarapa Benevolent-Society- be refunded;and that the United District m'ake.ft'eir' claim-before the estimate's of the yearare calculated by the.' On tbe ; letter'being. read from the 1 South County Council, asking if the Council were prepared to assist in the expenses of surveying a bridle, fromthe Wairurapa.to OtaM. Or Smith moved" That this Council have' no funds at thoir disposal, to dovoto to tho purpose and, that the - South County bo recommended to point out to.-the'-Survey. Department tliat thero was a probability of opening up. some valuable land by the proposed', taraok." Gr McUardle. seconded the motion. Or Be'etham pointed out that : thore was far better land to open up in the'Waugehu Valley, althoughthore might become good land opaied-up. by the proposed route. The resolution was then '.put and carried. •< ... . oahonga niv.l,: ' Mr Baker waited on the Council to know what they would do .with regard to the extension of the leaso of the land at tho ferry, as he was prepared to erect a new hotol there, provided tho present lease' of 4 years could be further extended to, say 21 years. The Maorios were willing to lease it for a further term of 16 years, Boine. time ago. He did not fee) justified in erecting a new building at a eost of about J2 700 without a guarantee as to the lease being renewed. Unless the lease wan extended, ho could not build, then the Licensing Committee [would not grant tho license, and the place would be closed.

Or Boethain said it was a quostion worthy of consideration and lie thought that the. ■ colonies'. and the mothercountry should pull together, for in case of.any difficulties, sueh as war, thoy would find that miily was strength, and he thought, that if the. list was laid on'the table it would give those an opportunity of subscribing who : desired to do so, " " .' ."

' Cr Hawkins eoold see lots of.biUots looming.iu the future for the favorites in connection with the movement, and thought that the less the colony had to do with it the boto. The motion was then carried.

A FESBTHLV'S IKOUBUSS,

Mr Baker called attentiou to the evasion of tho Oahang'a ferry by people going over the Akitio crossing at the mouth of the river about away.. Mr Handyside had, during the past year taken as much as £l5O for traffic across the Akitio ferry, whioh Mr Braker coiisidorod hard lines, as it was so much out of his pocket.

Cr Hawkins said the, Council had nq power to forco peoplo ovor the ferry, they might ask Mr Handysida, tq pjaei a foneo so as to keep the, traffic 'from the Akitio crossing. Cr Meredith pointod out the danger to snoop crossing at the Oahonga ferry. Mr Baker said the crossing was now recognised as the safest in the district and he referred to the largo number of swaggers who were put over without pay because they always pleaded being hard up, ' ; •

Or McCardle considered that Mr Baker should have- his annua) grant returned to him ineonsideration.of the good work ho was doing to tbo public Or Hawkins was not in favor of taxing the industrious settler with these loafers, as that was. what'.' it really meant by making a grant'ofthis kind, Or McCavdlo gave a ■ hofice of motion "That tho resolution passed at a previous meeting abolishing a grant to fche'Oahonga Ferry be rescinded." -- SPECIAL MEBtiKB. A special meeting was held to amend the by-laws re the. width of ties, portions of .the Upper; Taueru and the Aliredton Road--Boards wore included in the schedule, and slops were ordered to bo' taken (io carry oulj % necessary formula in connection with the additional roads. OHAKITABUS PBOPOBALS. j A circular was rea<j from the Buller County Council with'reference to tho Hospital and Charitable Aids Bill, amongst the proposals ofwhieh was one for making the charges fall princl-. pally, upon the wealthy elasßOß throughout the colony, and not as afc present upon persons irrespective of" the measure of sacrifice." Cr Meredith said he considered that/ the poverty in the eolonies was due to the recklessness in which the public works policy was carried out, and moved " That the Charitable Aid Aet, being the outcome of the gambling and extravagant public works policy to which the mayorifcy ofratepayorswere not a party, this Council cannot agree with the proposals of the Bailor Gounoil."--=,',.;■"./ -fyr ■••-■'■■ Or McCardle did not-agree with the wording of the proposal, and moved as an amendment" Thai this Gqutity do not view with favoj the proposal of the Buller County Counsil," : Or Maunsell thought that the proper source to draw the Cbaritab>' Aid
