WELLINGTON-MONDAY, (Before his Honor the Chief His Honor took his seat upon the bench at 10 o'clock, and the Grand Jury found True Bills as follows: William Henry Orossley, larceny; Thomas Lawson, larceny; John William Urabtree, burglary; same, breaking and entering; same, breaking prison; Henry vVhite, arson j Arthur Gordon, assault and robbery. .LARCENY.' " William Henry Cr.ossley'. was arraigned on an indictment charging him wilh having, on the 15th January, last, stolen..from John 'Donovan a silver watch and chain. Mr Hell prosecuted'for tho Crown, The prisoner, who was not .represented by Opunsel," pleaded uot guilty,
.The case for tho prosecution was that.on the day in. question, the accused, who is .an old offeudei', lay down outside (lm house .of John Donovan, a laborer, in Dixon-street. After some time Mrs Dixon went out for a walk, and during her absence the accused entered the house and took away her husband's watch and chain. On her return she gave information to the police, and on. Constable 'Madden arresting the accused the stolen articles were found in his possession:/ Tho jury, after..,a deliberation'of about five minutes, brought in a verdict of Guilty,' Prisoner 'pleaded Guilty to several charges of larceny at Auckland, Wellington, and other places. ■'"• His-.Honor directed that the pnsoner ; 6hould be brought up,for sentence at 10' a.a. on Tuesday. BURGLARY AND HOUSEBREAKING. John William Crabtree. pleaded guilty to having, on the Ist February last, broken into the dwelling housoof John Knowles, and stolen therefrom a quantity of jewellry,, and 'also with having, on the 31st of January last, broken into the dwelling, house ot Richard J. Gill, and- stolen therefrom a number of articles. He also admitted that at the -time the offence was'committed he was undergoing a sentence for a felony committed at Christchurch. Mr Jellicoe asked: that sentence
should be deferred until Wednesday in order that he mighT.'be able to address the Court on behalf of the Mr Jellicoe obtaiued leave-to;_call, Mr Garvey, governor of the gaol on; Wednesday. Af tei'heawng the evidence, his Honor summed lip, and after a quarter of an hour's consideration the jury brought in a verdict of guilty on the second count (receiving stolen property).: His Honor deferred sentence till 10 o'clock next morning ASSAULT AND BOnBERY. Arthur Gordon was charged with having assaulted and robbed one Samuel Piidney on the 16th March. , The prisoner pleaded uot guilty, and was defended by Mr Jellicoe; His Honor having summed up, tho jury relived.and returned in a quarter of an hour with a verdict of not guilty.
