Tub first topic that "your own" feels inclined to discourse on this week is the weather, the change from the dry,' muggy heat of lust week having given place to cold southerly weather, with just a slight sprinkling of ruin. The. weather, which had been very sultry, filially settled down towards the end of the week into hurd, northwesterly gales, which finally brought dotfn the rain on Sunday evening,; and in conae(pence, we are looking forward to seeing a little greeu grass. ouce more, .TJie. outlook for the winter, however, is very unpromising as I am afraid the rain is coming too late in the season, and froßta are already making their appearance, a very: heavy .one' being experienced this morning. .(This I cannot vouoh for, oil' my-'owu authority, but judging from tbo nn« willingneßs with which I this morning, I am riot too sceptical to believe,) On the whole, however, the change will prove Very beneficial, the Bottlers complaiiiing,yery much of 'the way their stock were falling off for .the want of water,-'"

The annual examination of the Public School'takes place on Wednesday next, I believe, by Mr Lee, the Board's inspector. As the school opened'at the commencement of the year instead of the end of January, as is usually the case, the standing complaint of the shortness of time between the holidays and the examination will not. be available.

Should the weather keej.|sbowery t the rain will prevent the carts from using the road to the pit, on account of its slippery nature. The byrlaw of the County ■Council, regulating the width of tires to be used on certain of the district roads, and which takes effect on the Ist of May, and during the- winter months, is, I notice, being distributed through the district, and will no doubt help to keep the roads from getting into that almost impassable state in which they were last winter.
