The return iriatoh betwoeh Town a and Country took place yesterday -on I the Masterton Park Oval,: and ended [ in a disastrous defeat of the country representatives. Mr Stokes captained the losers who first handled the willow, and managed, by the steady play of Messrs Elder and Hood who contributed 29 and 20 respectively, to reach a total of 94, tho only other.double ; figures being H. Williams H. LittleJohn (Captain) and Iggulden commenced the batting fotf the Town, the start not being very promising, for the first wicket (Iggulden's) fell for. a score of 7. Bobison joined tne oaptain, and a repetition of last Saturday's play took place, the pair treating the spec-, tators to somo pretty batting, and the* field to somo leather hunting, and when at last Rbbison sent one into Williams' hands the score stood 102-2-47. Fowler, a valuablo addition to the Mqsterton Clubj made his debut, and remained at the wicket till Littlejohn received his quietus, when the telegraph showed 8-140-58. 'A'b there was not much prospect of the game being played out it wasdecidedto draw theitumps when the captain's wicket fell at 5,80, Fowler carrying out his bat for a well played 21, tho batting of the trio being without exception the best seen on the Oval. The following are the scores:- • . . COUNTRY.
UABTBKTON-OPASIJOOKEIOLUB AUTUMN MEETIM. :. President, William Lowes; Troasurer, A Elkins; A. W. Cavo ; Startei T. Parsons; Stewards, R...Qampbelj] E. 1. Chamberlaiu, T. E. Chamberlain, T. G. Mason, J. Ross, J. C Vallance, R. R We'oh; Clerk .of Scales, J. Eardiug; Clerks of Course W, loms and fl. Yatea; Timekeeper J. Muir; Handicappor, J. 0. Evetfc'; Secretary, R, J. Fitton. The Autumn Meeting of the Maatorton Opaki Jockey Club, held on St. Patrick '» Bay, did not pas 3 off bo successfully as f ti predecessors. The inclement state of the weather in tho forenoon, no doubt prevented a larger attendance there being only, about 300 porsons present. For some reason or other the Club had provided no mnsie on the course, and everything seemed to lack that energy, which usually characterises these meotings; Not one of the events were got off by the advertised time, and in one. or two cases they were nearly an hour and a half behind. Those visitors who came by train had to leave the course before the lasc two races wore run, and their remarks, etc., wore anything but flattering. By the time the last race was ran, you could hardly discern the colors of the riders. The meeting had an unlucky commencement, through the fatal accident to Mr Burrow's Cribbage, prior to the Hurdle-Race being run. Herd, the jockey was giving him a preliminary jump, when the horse struck the hurdle in front of tho. Grand Stand, turning ft somersault, and. fnlllng on top of his rider. Neither the horse nor jookey moved, and, on aßsistanoe arriving, Herd' who was'lying underneath the horse, was found to ba slightly stunned.from a blow he had received on the head, and the hone had the spino of his back broken, which necessitated his throat being out. Much sympathy was expressed'for the loss Mr Burrows had sustained, as only the other day lie-had refused any offer of £IOO for him, As s hurdler and fiat racer Oribbage has been fairly successful, he having won, besides several seconds; the foUowinp i-Hurdles at Nelwn, 1885: Hurdles and Flying Btakeß at Opaki, 1885 jTinuiFlyiW Stakes, 1880; and the Flying Stakes at Island Bay, 1887. He has also pai4 threo big dividends of £4B, £32, and. £26 respectively. We believe this is the first accidont of the kind recorded in the colony, where a horse has met its death whilst doing a preliminary. Halicoro, being.the only other starter, merely walked, pv.er fort|e stakes, The cpiirs'e was in excellent orijer and the racing throughout was gpod. Mr Pamms, who acted as starter, although ho had sop fractions young, sters to deallfith, got the horses aVay'ra capital style, Tho Stewards are to bo complimented for introducing' Into the district numbered saddle cloths, whlohenables everybody to tell'the name of the horses at a glance, as tho number of .tho cloths correspond with those -in the .official race books, thereby saving the 'viaitorsjthe trouble, of making- enquiries. A totalfeator was oh the ground, worked by Mr £, Ames, who put through a trifle over £BOO the" day." Tho two publican's booths presided over by.Mr T. Thompson and Mrs Wa'gg, with the aid of heir assistants, wero - fairly patronised, as was also Mr McGlashan's refreshment atall. The latter caterer also prepared a first olosa- lunohoon! for the Stewards. The various games of chance were less numerous on the coarse ; than we have seen at a race-meeting, i This was no doubt greatly duo to the ..pwewoe of Sargt Prioa aad HW&ti <fe>,
force;, who put down any game that had the least' suspicion of fraud about it. Although there were several drunks to bo seen about during the day, there was an absence of rowdyism. The following are »i,» ««-..-.nL - .t'ii.j _. >'.. . ■°
