Tho mild rains of the past few davs have : made a great different iu the appearance of pastures every wh«r#. With i tew weeks more of such weather, sfeook will not fare so badly iu winter as wae suitioipated. —;Pahiatua Star. An incident ooonrred daring" the Tenm raoe. meeting which clearly demonstrates that when the air it charged with the rumor of spieleni, &0,, that even respectable persons are liable to be suspected when their identity is unknown to those whom them come iu oontact with. Throe of Masterton's citizens were return' tag .on horsobakafter 11 doing" the country gathering, and having reached the hospitable roof of the, half-wiy house, decided to wait a bit. The spirit of gambling being aroused in them a game of cards was proposed, and some .back ountry hands were invited to join in Luck favored tho citizens—thoy held remarkable hands—right and left brnvor and joker every time. Tho couutrvmon looked at each other, and some mysterious ■ whispering passed between them, in which the word "Bpielers" waß fie--1 ijueiitly heard. Presently .they g'tup and left tho room, looking thoroughly •disgusted," having no doubt had quito enoutrh of that company. It's hardly j safe to mention the word " spieler" to f either of the trio now, especially in eon1' neptioil with a game of cards.

An equestrian feat, not very successfully performed, In Bannister street last evening, almost robbed Masterton of its leading telegraphist, aud bid fair to ortata an extraordinary vacanoy in the Borough Counoil through the loss of one oi its most energetic members, who is a manufacturer of alcoholio beverages. It appears that the former having ofosed the office, was ridins leisurely homeward on Ilia Hark Bay (canyirg several parcels) ' meditating, iu an epicurean spirit, on the good things in perspective to satisfy the craving of his fasting stouaoh, when the Councillor, who was evidently on his way to the Gas Works to fill himself f° r meeting this evening, seeing a vacant seat behind the unsuspecting operator, 'was seijsed with an idna, whioh he immediately put into execution and—"Hey Presto 1" with a bound that would make the fortune of any down in a circus, he sprang on to the vacant space behind the saddle and embraced tho rider, who h id, up to now, been unaware that his was dual passenger vohicle, Now the Bay is one of tho quietest animal* in oxistance under ordinary circumstances and before, this event happened the owner was quite igiriraut of its playful propensities, It entered into the spurt with the vigor of a new chum footballer. At first it stopped as though, to collect its scattered thoughts, and thou started—there was fun, and no mistake. Tho animal arched it- back in a manner that made the Councillor hug his fellow passenger like a modern Don Juan, and >ach time the playful creature made a bound, t' e Telegraphists parcels shot through the air like meteors, the passengers eventually following in a most indignified manner, and in close compauy. It was soft where they fell-on the vacant ground at the rear of the Club Hotel-or things might have turned out worse. Having coli lected'themselves, the pare-Ib, and the : Bay together, another start was made, , but only one rode this time, the pedestrian, no doubt, came to the that it .was rather dangerous to emulate " Ada, the Human Rocket," especially when the motive power sulfates from near tho bind legs of a horae, Lawyers are not, as a rule, credited with having much conscience, and judging by the following incident which occurred in this district, the W&irarapa representatives of the Bar are not overburdened I with that faculty, and are not a whit bitter than a member of the profession who oliarged " Jack Bra?"
