Terrible Earthquake in Europe.
London, February 26. The excitement and alarm created by the earthquake have had no equal of late years in Europe, but now that Mount Etna has burst into activity, anxiety and terror are on the increase rather than on' the wane. The general, feeling of insecurity has reached fever heat, and in Nice a perfect .panic is'still raping. At least 15,000 people havo left the city, and the oxodus of affriglited people still continues, The greatest solicitude is felt.as to the'fate'of villages in" districts yet un. explored. Throughout the Riviera tho railway lines are completely blocked. In many cases the rails have been torn up, and in others have been buried beneath tons of earth and rocks, Throughout the afflicted country, scenes occurred heart rending in tho extreme. -Bedriddon and sick people, even thoso on tho point of death, were taken from their homes and placed in > open spaces. Everywhere could be seen crowds of bewildered and screamingly-frantic persons, At Savona a considerable number of lives wore lost, Everywhere in the vicinity of Genoa wreck and ruin reigned supreme. Anything like an accurate estimate of the loss of life in this terrible calamity is impossible at present.
February 27. A thousand people wore killed by tho earthquake in Genoa. Savona wascntirely laid in ruins.. Slight shocks aro still felt in Italy.
