The first number of a new paper called the Standard was issued at flew Yotk on January 7, by the author of "Progress and Poverty," to support his peculiar views on tbo scienco of government, lu. the opinion of unprejudiced contemporaries, the paper committed suicide in its birth. : Its salutatory waa a frenzied attack on the .Roman Catholic Church for its discipline measures toward Dr McLynh, in, ♦he course of which Goorge published himself •as the Church's bitter: and active foe. 'This avowal separates him definitely and fatally from a largo body of working men, whose religion happens to be tho Roman Catholic, and identities him with tho Socialistic and Anarchical element that rejects gll religious, control. In connection with tliia mattor it may be stated: that Dr McLynn, on account of his partizanßhip for 'Mr George; has beou deposed from his pastorate of, St. Stephen's Church, and this fact leads tho Sunday Union and Catholic Times to say" Henry George has been, before the past" few months, an •apparition,' Tbo movement he crystallised by hia own personality has-borno aa its fruits two untoward effects; -If tho wree'r of the most amiablo, sweetest, Md'best of men is orowned-as a priest, thd eareer ot Ho'nry George as a public naiTkVnded \ty"his own hand. ; :i)r. fcloLy nn is ordered to Rome on January 11: Two prominent Catholics of New York refused to serve on the Banquet Coiiimittee with George becausfi of his attack on the Romish Church. ■ •
