Blenheim, February 11, : A painful feeling has been excited hero in consequence of the refusal of the churches (except the Catholics, who readily consented) to mako collections on Hospital Sunday. They allege that as many members of the congregations are already rated for charitable purposes they ought not to be asked to further contribute. It is thought that the refusal will lead to a diminution of the revenue the - churches acquire from outside sources through bazaars and subscription lists,"

Wangandi, February 11. The trouble up the Wauganui River between the natives and the River Improvement party is said to be simply that the natives have an idea that the removal of stones from the bluff on the river near the Island of Moutoa will cause the banks to fall in. Major Kemp will probably be asked to write a letter to tho natives, and this is expected to'put an end to the obstruction as previous letters have done in similar cases,

The charge against Dr Connolly for alleged criminal assault on Mrs Pope was resumed this morning. Mrs Pope was recalled and cross-examined as to a conversation acknowledged to have been had with-a neighbor. She acknowledged toiiaving said .tliat her husband objected to her seeing the dootor by herself, but denied that she had said that if he know she had, the doctor should be arrestad, or words to that effect.' Drs Earle • and- Tripe gave expert evidence, and agreed that the condition of the woman was likely to conduce to hysteria. This concluded the case for the prosecution.
