The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 9, 1887.

THE GAS MUDDLE. —"■■■ ■♦ -' - Fon some months past tho Mastorton Borough Council, without perhaps suppreasing the fact that the new gas works were not being constructed in a proper and workmaulike manner have been silent with respect to tho difficulty, which was known to exist, throwing a mantle of charity over their Engineer and themselves which has sufficed to conceal the fault, and induce ratepayers to believe that all was well. Last night, however, the disclosure of a very grave oversight or blunder came out at last in open meeting, and the Council decided to obtain the opinion of a competent Engineer on the works as a whole. We regret very much that this reference to an engineering authority was not made boforo the town was lit up, for we feel certain that a considerable sum of money would have been saved by putting things right when they were found to be wrong, instead of waiting till the last moment and endeavoring to correct the fault by unwise patching. We shall now get an authoritative report as to the'actual condition of the works, and till we. obtain this it will be idle to say more about the matter. The Borough Council have taken a wise course in calling in the aid of a competent Engineer, tho only fault we find with them being that this step should have been taken long ago.
