An important aniiounostu^nt' to. saw-' miliars from Meßßrs iTws. Chapman and Sonß, Baw makers,' Wellington, appears in another column. -.•'-,>. John William Cmbfcree, the' oaoaped prisoner from the Mount Cook gaol who U& tho whole Wellington police force a lively dance for three daya'before they caught him, was searched on being taken to the police station? when tho following articles were found, in his possessionThree sold bracelets, two gold brooches, one silver do, one.'pair, of. earrings, one ditto with rubies, silver brooch and earrings, stone brooch; two gold seals, gold guard and locket, pair gold sloove links, pair of earrings, pair of gold studs, pearl necklace, capo containing looking glass, comb, eye-glass, ".scissors'and button hook, gold bvcaß>p, lady's gold ring, three pocket kniveß, five perioils, threo bunches of keys, cigar holder and case, three purses, silver spoon and watchkey, box of salt, a latch-key, andsevoml other artioles, and£l 4s 7d in'money. Tho articles will probably be jpdeiitified, and the prisoner will, in that case, .be charged with tlio robbery. Crabtree was charged at' the Wellington Police Court yesterday and.committed for trial for esoaping from legal custody while under' going a sentence. From latest particulars it appears that the jewellery, etc., found on Crabtree has boon'identified as the property of Mr. John Knowles and Mr Gill. Besides the clothes he was wearing when arrested, Crabtree had got together some .female apparel evidently for masquerading purposes'.' The .arrest was made chiefly on the •'clue obtainable by bis wearing a '"bell-topper" hat.

The Bookworms Tea.Oompany have an advertisement in another column that we .would recommend our readers to peruse, ;as it cohtaiiisiofae very. valuable ; informatio'n'to litorary tea-drinkers. ■, Mr Qapper'b; t ßaw; .in!ill. on the .Upper Fernridge had, a narrow escape iof. being burned down yesterday through the high wind driving a hush fire towarda it, tho wind luckily changod at the right time, andblew the'taps in another direction. 'We hear that a grass firoatManaia placed somoof Mr Oolway's property in danger, , but through tho exertious. of the' neighbours, it was confined to tho destruction of a few paneh of .fencing. . Tho bush fires were raging vory bad again at Carterton jesterday, the heavy north-woat wind fanned them up afresh. Mr Seth Hart of Dalofield had the wholo of his hay and cow-sheds totally destroyed by fire. The settlers on Andersons lino had all their work to do to save their . dwellings from being burnt, and if tho wind springs up again thn fires will be just as bad as ever, as tho ground is covered with dry timber. We loarn by telegram from Pahiatua that the strong wind yesterday caused.the bush fires to spread rapidly. All tho dry standing trees were ignited around Pahiatua and great difficulty was experienced in saving the dwellings near the bush. T. James, ju'n., on the Tiraumea road was burnt out. He was insured for £IOO, but ihe.loßs over, and above is £l5O. The party who firod the Irtish did so in opposition to James' wish, the wind being directly on his house. There is likely to be a court case ovet the affair, ■ The following notices of motion have been given by Mr Beetham for consideration at tho next meeting of tho Land Board :—l. That Government bo requested to,expend a sum of money for tho purpose of opening up Crown lands adjacent to Mauricuville West, 2, That the Board wishes to urge on the Government the advisability of .surveying tho Puketol broken country with small runs'at an early date, 3, That the Imd'adjacent to Mauriceville .West should be Surveyed as small runs, and 'should be offered to the public at an early date.. 4. That tho Board strongly urges - oh. the Land Department, tho necessity that .exists for a' branch Land Office at Pahiatua, and that all plans relating to:land in that district should bo provided for public inapootioni-
The "ghost"scare is eauß.irig a groat deal of excitement, and many people a«i. on the watch in the' evenings with - dogs and guns. As far its we can gather it was a curious looking animal that was seen, perhaps it will be remembered that about nine years ag.Mr Riohard Barton turned out..some wallabys on his station at I'erinoa, and it is not at all unlikely that tho animal Been is ono of the species turned out by Mr Barton. Wallabys have extraordinary jumping powers and somewhat resemble the kangaroo. The. animal whatevor it is; was fired at on Tuesday night by Mr T. Ray, who missed it. One old woman, who saw it, declares that'it had a cat in its mouth, Wallabys are very inoffensive animals, and eat nothing but grass.—Observer.
The,adjourned enquiry into thoova-' sion of tho Land Act alleged to have beon committed by William Leslie Adams in acquiring possession of section 4, block 4, Kaiwhata, was resumed at tho meeting of the Land Board yesterday morning says the Poßt. Mr A. de Brandon appeared for Mr Adams, and Mr E. Shaw for Mr B." -Ferres, who, with Mr (J. Simpson, objected to Adams being a'lowed to take up the land, on the pround that ho already held, by. partnership with another, tho full quantity of land which any person is entitled to hold under the perpetual lease system. William Leslie Adams was examined on oath and swore that when he took up the section in question he had no intoreßt in any other land excepting in three acres of suburban land at Kumeroa. The interest which he had previously held in a sublease of 278 acres at Kumeroa had then bi-en sold to Th-u Hewitt who had been his partner in tho leasing. Thos. P. Howitt gave corroborative evidence as to tho purchase of Adams' interest in the Kumeroa land. The Board then went into Committeo to consider tho matter, and after some deliberation it was decided that no case had been mado out by the objectors, .-A resolution was passed thanking Messrs Adamß and Hewitt for their >• attendance, and granting. them travelling expenses'.' Tho Alleyne. Wade Comedy. Company .finished a successful season in the Theatre 'Royallast evening; tfhen the.drama of the-Bells,' and the last two acts' :: of "Puck" were performed.. Thy'first piece was not at all suitable to" a Master-' ton audience, and appeared to go' off .very, quint, this was not bo much-on account of the acting, but. to tho uninteresting nature of the drama. While it gives Mathias every opportunity of exhibiting his dramatio ability, the numerous other characters have scarcely anything to do beyond filling the st/tgo. Mr Alley'no mado ; the most of the heavy, impersonation of Mathias, and received a most enthusiastic call on the fall of tho curtain after the great.trial:scone. The'tiiies were well arranged, and ..worked without a hitch, and were most realistic; ' Puck wan even more successful than on tho previous representation, Miss Florence Wade fairly eclipsing herself, in .the groat struggle scono with Carlos (Mr Alloyno,) Tho demand for the company after tho performance was over was a guagc of their popularity, each member ..roocivipq quite an ovation as they appeared before the curtain. They left this morning by spooial coach for Woodville, where'thoy will perform'this-evening, and commence a season in Napior to-morrow ovemjig. ~ About that £3b to be oivenaway. To tho Editor-Sir, Will you allow me through your columns to lot the people of the Wairarapa know that I am going to sell-all my stock, consisting of men's, youth's, and; boys' clothing, shirts, hats, [hosiery, &c, at a great reduction in prices up'till the end of the year; and also to remind, them';that everyone who buys goods to the value of 2s 6d gets a ticket in my £35 competition. .
