The toll gates on the Forty Mile Bush road open to-day. The practical effect of them will be to drive through traffio from the Wairarapa railway line to the Wellington-Manawatu railway. The Government, in refusing to help to maintain the road, are simply handing revenue over to a private company. The County Council Will obtain a small revenue by the tolls, but it is likely to be a diminishing one. The good they will derive'from this source will be more than counterbalanced by the loss of traffic the district will sustain, and by the general irritation and annoyance, tvhiohwill be expressed'among .all classes of settlers. The Government have been foolish and the County Council unwise.
