GREYTOWN FIRE BRIGADE SPORTS.

For the first time this deserving body of men undertook to provide the public with a day'a amusement, and as a maiden effort and in the face of many counter attractions they have no reason to bo ashamed of the effort. The Reserve,' with its visitors and booths and tents looked lively, and the Greytown Brass Band contributed much to the day's enjoyment-of the spectators, Mr Hammerioh, of the Grey town Hotel, dispensed all Boris of liquors to the thirsty ones, and Mr Grigg provided the more substantial refreshments. The Fire Brigades' competition took up much time, and though useful and instructive to the members of the various Brigades, did not draw muoh interest from the public; generally. Some smart work was shown by the men, and it is to be regretted that through an unfortunate oversight by one of the members of the Greytown team, that the tie of this team with Masterton was not finished, Master' ton secured the honors for swart work and they were- Certainly, worthy of it* The Greytown men sucoeeded, better than was expaqted,. and we say this beoause there is no doubt they were at a disadvantage tough'a combination of unfavorable oiroumstancei, ■■■; On Thursday night they'were'calledvbut'td. a fire at Mr Moriarty'a .shop, and it. -waS'past midnight when they wont home; on Friday afternoon they wer,e called to'Horoa.to'-battle with & bush fire whioh. threatened .Mr Cross's house, '. and; on' the morning ',q( the sports.th,ey.wereengagei,in ; pparing the grptrnd-ior the"day's events. -, No 8 team in the first trial failed to join the two pieces of hose and the water coming it had to bo given up. •It-will be seen that No. 5, Quin's Greytown team, and Muir's Masterton team tied.
