The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1887. THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
Ik [cm last issue we named eleven out of the twelve Buooetafal candidates for municipal honors. ', Straogsto say the only one whose chances we.niis' calculated was Mr A. W. BsML. 'We-thought'fce would beat Mr"T.'E. Chamberlain,' whereas Mr T. iE. Chamberlain beat him. As Mr Retail iippeara to take his defeat in good part we can afford to accept it wtK resignation and eKpressounelvesthoitjUghly satisfied with the 'results of.tbo fpnr polls.- The verdict of,the ratepayers of Masterton is a "strong, vote, of- confidence in the member?/.of the; late' Council. The new Council is virtually the old one with -the addition of three new chairs filled by Messrs T. E. Chamberlain, Carman and Pepworth. The two former lire old settlers who ehjoy to a very considerable dpgrea the confidence of the l.urgossas,. and the totter, thouglrfe'tforcparaiivelynew man has vindicted his .claim,, to '.a. publio position by the display of" ability both as a thinker and db a speaker. As Mr Gafper pointed out, : 'the election of ye* lerdaywas a direct condemnation, of Mr JReuall's "successful Boh'eme for quartering the town. Mr. Recall is, in a measure ' hoist / with ' his] own. petard.' but it may* be said 'that thrQjighosjt.the proceeding!} which he took to break up the Borough he (fvowedly' waai: giving. jjjfecf to v the Wishes of a minority in opposition to the known vievfs of thioajority. :

Deceased retired to bed about 10 p.m. apparently in fair health, but died at 10,80' He caught cold some time ago at some athletic sports whew he was a competitor. Deceased was a youug married man. On account of the timely assistance of Mwsra Macguire,. Webster,, Kimberloy and others, who were on tho'soeno at the outbreak of firo at Mr Moriarty'a Boot Shop, at Greytown on Thursday night last, thoro 'was no serious damage sub-. 1 tained, with the oxcoption of a few pairs' 1 of boots being damaged by water, Hie 1 ' glass in the shop window broken, and tho
wall paper and ceiling being saturated. Had the flames taken hold, nothing could have saved tho house and the shop of Mr St, George, chemist, adjoining. A meeting oi the Committee of the Groytown Horticultural and Industria Society was held at the Greytown Borough. Council Chambers last night. Mr 0. Higgins, the Secretary, presented a statement of matters connected with the late Spring Show, and as a good credit balance was Bhbwn when all subscriptions promised are realised, the position of the Society was considered, very satisfactory. It was .resolved to'hold the next Show on the 17th March, bo as to benefit both the' Society,.- and the Sports Committee. Votes of thanks were passed to the Secretary and the Chairman, and tho Committee adjourned. By reference to our .advertising columns it will be seen that' Messrs M, Caselberg and-Co, will commencea great dealing sale of- thoir large. ..stock ion Saturday next. Haying made large 'purchasßfl.of Manchester 'goods tho -firm - is compelled to offor the whple of their present stock at largo reductions.to make room for now goods, : The elootion of the now Borough Council was celebrated last evening by the gas being lighted for the first tune. The sevoral street lamps in Quoen-streot wete fixed up to admit of this being done, but the illumination was vory faint owing 'to the amount of eir in tho pipes. The; Mayor's lamp burned brig htest, and gave quite 'an 'enlivening appearance to the neighbourhood of the Council Chambers. It will no doubt be several days, botora. the mains are in thorough working order, but there is nothing to pijbvent the business people from using the m, and dispensing with' their dangoroiis and trouble' some kerosene lamps. . The early train .intended to catoh the first train to the Wairarapa did not reach the station yesterday morning until after the train had started, and the intending passeogorß were therefore sadly disappointed, There were fourteen- or fifteen of these, Mistakes of this'kind are not only annoying, but may also, indeed, involve heavy loss, The driver of the tram has beon dismiEsed, by Mr S. Smith the manager. We are informed, says the Post, that the tram was actually at the station when the tram started, but the railway authorities would not wait long enough to enablo the passongots to get aboard, • It is now timo that the rosidonts of Groy. town aroused themselves as to the necessity of procuring a suitable fire engine for the use of the borough. At the outbreak of & fire tho other nigh'.ono man dragged tho go cart of a machine that represents an engine out of the shed, and in his exoitoment must have tried to carry it under his arm to the scene of the conflagration, for the next seen of the mtn and the toy engine Ran both of them lying capsized in the gutter near the Town Hall. It ib a most extraordinary circumstanca that a town of the size and importance of Greytown, with a main street of over a mile long, and with houses in such close eontiguity to each other, should not have a suitablo fire ongine to battle with sucii a formidable enemy, We havo a good and thoroughly efficient Volunteer Brigade, andwhon a large firo breaks out, their efforts are paralysed through the absence of proper apparatus to work with.-Standard. The following addresß was dehvored by the Judge previous to passing sentence of death on Caffrey and Penn.for the Great Barrier murder:—" Prisoners at the bar: After a lengthened trial and a notable defence, you have been found guilty on evidence which carried conviction to the minds of all who heard it of the fearful crime wherewith you stand charged. The jury have recommended you to. mercy, and; that recommendation' shall be duly forwarded to the Governor, but I can hold out no hopes to you now that it will be acted upon, for sincetheday when .word, was spoken, "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed," no moro cowardly or more deliberate murder has ever been planned or perpetrated, From the earth whore it was spilt the voios of that old man's blood cries aloud unto Heaven. You deemed, your escape scours, for the keel of your vessel left no track that human eye could follow, but yon forgot the way-of God is on the seas and his path is;on the. great waters. A' Hi» word the stormy wind arose which.drove you westward on iha shores of Australia, whence you have been brought hither to face your doom. Yet to you the law.will'be mors merciful than #ou were to your victim.. You sent him •to his last account without one moment's respite' for repentance, To yon time will be given to meet your God. With man's tribunalyouhavenow well nigh done; but hereafter we musk all stand before th> judgment seat of Christ, and if you would there find pardon {entreat you to spend in penitence and prayer the few days yet left to you on earth. It now only remains for me to pass upon you the last awful senteuoe of the law-that you, and each of you, be severally hung by the peek until you sro dead, and may the. lord in Ms infinito mercy) havo compassion on your souls. ' About ii[at #fb to be aim away.~ To the Editor—Sir, Will you allow mo. through your columns to let the people of the Wairarapa know that I am going to sell all.my stock, consisting of men's,' youth's, and boys' clothing, shirts, hats,, hosiery, &c, at a great roduotion in prices : up till tho end of the year; and also to .remind them that everyone who buys goods to the value of 2s 6d gets a ticket! in my £35 competition, Think of that I By spending 2s (id with me, you may win money enough to carry you for a trip round New Zealand.-JoHN ThObbum, fllotliier, #«„ Willis rt„WßjD?toij, ; '
