TARATABLCARTERTON JOCKEY . CLUB. About ;throe hundred persons assembled on the Taratahi-Carterton Jockey Club's course, Clareville, on Saturday., last, and witnessed a fairly good day's sports jTh'e weather was very hot,! scarcely a breath of wind being perceptible throughout the day. The< coarse was,, |*s might bo ■expected after the late drought, fearfully ' hard, and the grasa dry and slippery. This, no doubt, accounted, for the dor time in which the races were performed. Assisted by the extreme heat, Host Buckeridgedid a very good;trade, and Mr A. L. White, with his refreshment booth, provided an excellent lunch for hungry visitors. |The first event on the programme, tho Hurdle Race., was a boil over for Halicore, the .other horse, Negus looking as if he had been taken from a trap to fee saddling paddock. Halicore cantered along, taking his jump 3 in tho easiest mannor possible, whilo the other animal was vainly endeavoring to negoti* ate tho first hurdle, the former winning the race by about a mile. In the Maiden Raoe, Fraud excited considerable surprise by winning the race very easily, to the delight of the lucky investors on him in the machine, The' Taratahi Jockey Club Handicap was a very 'exciting race between - Normanby and Satanclla. Normandy was the favorite, but the little black mare came very close to pullin? off the race, and would undoubtedly have dono so, had not Gravestock jostled at the post, keeping young Hockley so close to the fence that ho could use neither whip nor spur, Rollo looked very likely for this, but out his frog on a stono, and broke down on entering the straight. Mr Ray entered a protest against Normauby on the ground that Mr Tailored had not declared his whole overweight, he having only declared 21bs, when he was carrying A long disousskm among the Btewards ensued, and the dispute was eventually settled in favor of Mr Tancred. ..TheNovel Race proved a moral for Hutana's Tanui, who won as he liked. The Hack Race, which brought out' a fbld of ten, was the most exciting contest of the day, resulting, in'a.dead .heat : between Donald's Torea' (lata Roughcut) and A.- flosking's Discord. A protest was entered by T. Lyons on behalf of ' Hoskins, on the ground that Koughcut was entered for the New Zealand' Cup, 1885. It was resolved by the Stewards ~ that the totalisator pay out on the dead, " heatj and that the race be run out between the two horses, the stakes to be held by the Stewards till the matter was finally decided.
