It is somewhat-difficult to forecaste the result of the Municipal election today, but we anticipate that it,will be favorable to the re-election of 'ilie exCouncillors. In tie North Blinkhorne may poll fairly, but wedo not expect to see liira; b,eat either Messrs E. E. Chamberlain,- Perry, or Cullen. In the East' Ward Messrs Barley, Prangneli, tad Evemden wili no doubt pick up a considerable > number of votes but we exjiect Messrs
Muir, Ellrins,' iid Mason to be more than level witjfthern. In the South Ward we Tbeljeve Messrs Gapper, Papworth, and Carman will be placed, as ■Mr Kibblowhito, though lie mayfpoll a good many town, votes ..mil: not 1 ' fl.o equally weUin the' Suburban part'of his'.' district. The Mas'terton schools re-opened this morning after the Christmas holidays, The Hon P. A. Hiokton, the local' horse tamer, ib announced to appear in the' Theatre Royal on Wedneaday evening, when an exhibition of taming will be given on unbroken hones, A comet, due south, has been plainly visible or the past two evenings from Maaterton, and has the appearance of possessing an extraordinarily long tail, In the Mastarfcon Court on Saturday last, before Mr Ton Stunner, R.M., Robert Alexander was oharged with stealing small goods to the value of 5s from the shop of Mr W. Perry, butcher, and was sentenced to 14 day's imprisonment.

Further meetings are announced at Taueru on February 4, at Tonui on Feb, 5, Whareama Feb. 7, and Gladstone February 8.

Messrs Lowes and lorns announce an extensive sale of stock in trade, being the whole of Mr Gundersen's valuable stock, horses, vehicles, etc. The sale will take place at Mauriceville on Tuesday, Feb, 2nd. Mr F. H. Wood announces his usnal Taratahi Stock Sale for Thursday noxt. The list at present embraces ewes, lambs, wethers, fat bullocks, steers, heifers, dairy cows and horses. • ; On Friday night about half past ten, Mr W. Perry, on reaching his. No 1 Shop found a man inside helping himself to black puddings, and other small goods, With the help of Mr Williams, the pilferer was detained until the police arrived, when he was given into custody, and received his due punishment at the hands of the R.M. on Saturday morning, The Harry Power Dramatic Company brought their season to a close on Saturday night at tho Theatre Royal by playing to a crowded house. The drama, "Lady Audley's Secret," was well put on the boards, and the burlesque that followed was one of the most amusing yet played before a Masterton audience. We are pleased to learn that Mr A. Matthews is progressing under Dr Hos. king's care, but it will be some months before he recovers from the effects of his accident. From what wo can gather the accident took placq on Thursday last and wascausod by Mr Matthews falling in front of tho reaper and binder which he was working, in endeavoring to stop the horses, In passing over him tho cutters tore the flesh off his shoulders, arm, and inside of his and but for his presence of mind in placing his arm in front of his head, the massive iron wheel must have caused instant death. His arm, and neck were. somewhat injured by the wheel passing over thorn, but as the weight of the machino was principally on the arm, the injuries to his head were not very severe.
