The witness continued: Sho Me'ved Caffrey had been outside loMng for her daughter, but she could not see him. Mr O'Meagher was proceeding to. ask the witness questions as to her statements before the Police Magistrate, when the Judge said if depositions were to be put in let them be put in at once. The depositions' were then put in, Shehad nothing to say aoout an attachment between Cnffreyand her daughter. They were friends, and there had. been some talk about their' being married, but she took no notice of it. Caffrey had been kind and, obliging to their family. When Caffrey came to her at the stockyard there was blood on th» revolver in his hand, as well as on hi» sleeve... She said' Her intiuiacy with Caffrey commenced about threo and a half years ago, and ended after about eighteen months. Caffrey had always been kind to her. She had no. tatoo mark on her arm, Shehad once had the initials "J,C." on' her arm ; she put them there herself;: they signified "Caffrey," and he had asked her to' do it. On re-examine ation by Mr Gover, the witness said that when she broke off her engagement with Caffrey he took."it,very badly. He said he would;;'bring either a ring or. a revolver, -He Baid "should not have any other--inan if she would not have him, 1 ' ■' .' , H - Auckland, January 20|| The evidence of twelve Vitnesm was heard to-day, and of Grace Graham, as taken; before the Police Magistrate, was read,.and Mr Williamson then announeed that the case for the prosecution had closed.
