Tho bush fire which has. be.en, burning for tlio.last week behind Mr The* Ray's residence at the Taratahi, got rather dangerously near to his homesjead yesterday, and tho-Fire Brigade with their engine stayed there some hours keeping the fire from running in the crass, with water from an adjoining oreek. There seems-to be one mass of bush fire at tho back of the township from Taratahi to Dalefield, and the place is enveloped in smoke. A very successful' performance ,of_M.rs. Henry Wood's favorite drama "East Lynne" was given by tho Harry Powor Dramatic Company in the Theatre Royal last evening. The piece went smoothly throughout,- the characters being sustainedin a very creditable manner by the whole of those engaged. The principal artißts were ca-lledbefpre. the -curtain as a reward for their successful efforts. The lively farce of "B.B.".'concluded the evening's entertainment. To-night the great Temperance:drama of '-'Ten nights m'a Bar-room will he produced, and to" -morrow night a'grand double bill has been arranged.

A fire occurred on the Taratahi Plains yesterday afternoon which totally de»---troyed-a 'dwelling- hoitt'et''belimging to Messrs Williams and - - Beetham, and formerly occupied by Mr Dakin: Afire caused by a spark from the railway engine having placed the house in danger last week, some workmen were put on to burn a clear space around it, and while, in the act a whirlwind caught some of the burning rubbish and carried it- on to the dwelling, and before they could get to- it : the fire had the mastery of the building, which was soon burned to the ground. The fire also proved vefy'destructive to tho fences on tho property, a groat many chains of it being destroyed beforo the workmen could check its progress. Tho "Waiohino" Lodge of Druids, U.A.O.D. was duly opened last night at Greytown.. Brother E. Jones, District President, conducted the opening ceremony assisted by the officers and mem-, bers of the Totara Lodge, Carterton, who included Bros.
