The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, JANUARY 21, 1887. THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
No less than eighteen candidates are now before the burgesses of Mastertqn, twelve of whom will no doubt be made happy by being placed,..; and the | remaining six will no doubt, live to I fight another day. The election will of course be fought out onthe present undesirable ward subdivisions', but | we feel more disposed, on account of the very unsatisfactory nature ,of our new quartering!?, to look upon. :the team as a whole, and ttiexprflpsahope [ that twelve good men will be returned [ to work for the interests, of- the town generally.' ' It wi|"b'e noticed that eight retiring councillors Messrs E, E. Chamberlain, ';Wi : Perry;' Gapper, Muirj r ' Mason, :?arson', Cullen , and Elkins 1 seek'rejection, arid we' feel disposed to roco'mm,end the ,;b,urge?seß to put them in again.' '.On some questions we have differed from them, but a? a body they have pulled well together, and carried on the l)usiness of the town creditably and harmoni. ously.- They' have been 'faithful workers, and it is perhaps eafer ;to 'retain their services than to supersede them with untried men, who may not possibly be better fitted for tho.position, and who are necessarily, .-untrained office-bearers. Coming'to-the new candidates we have an ex-Mayor aiid an ex-councillor, in the persons lof Messrs Eenall and Hessey, who may be supposed to have prior claims for consideration.' We like to 'see an exMayor who is not too proud to seek to re-enter the Council as m ordinary member, ,&jad we thank Mr Eenall for settihg'a good'example in the present election.;, : He dqes jaoti hpweyer,'j

Weshali'be glad to;see Mr : Hesssy "iit/v the',; Councjil again, as'Wis a good all round country representative, and whq-i? thoroughly ;l trustworthy. Messrs T. E.. These icanildates/thbugh new. io municipal contests, aro "more o'r less known as settlers- who have done good work in many positions'of usefulness in thisjown..' Theyi have, many friends and have some reason to look forward to Receiving a ;Tair ?sharo of public support.. That' they"'are' unlikely to be all placed goos %ithout;aaying, but even if some of them should be unsuccessful they will have paved the way for winning future municipal: campaigns. Of course a considerable amount of local feeling- will necessarily 1 be imported into tho present contest, but if ratepayers will be careful to vote only for suoh candidates as they honestly and conscientiously-believe will do "credit to the town whiob they may be called upon to represent, the result cannot be other than satisfactory.
