The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, JANUARY 17, 1887. THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
AiiißAßt of the preset Boroflgli montjoned .ks; candidates for' the coming election and it is gratifying to notice that'at a time when the munioipal administration is being questioned and challenged on all jsides those who are responsible for .it are to face the electors, '..lt. is' ; said that ablest membeis oithe present Council, M? 6, '.Hbson,. will decline to but sye trust he will strain a point to do sq, He poßßese'eß atl indepaml.#ce of judgment, an honesty of purpose, pid »r|x? perience of public affairs which makes him an acquisition to any public body/ jjj pne of the fow men whose opinion onany^?#. n ibowever it may differ from that of others, with it' a Considerable amount'of respect. We do not expect on this occasion to Sfte the old Councillor? returned wiUioufc
considerable opposition. It is in their favor that there are i!ow twelve seats to be filled, but the strong feeling which' exists as to the questionable liiannerm iwhich the gas-works are being completed will do them harm, Wo limy or may not see tho town "lit with 'ga'3 during .the next, tew days, but even if all goes well, and before the olection cornea off the mains are filled and the . jets roidiant, the impression that the -works have been unduly costjy to the town will still remain. We do •not suppose that the Borough Coiiii-' cillors themselves Jbi'ow as yet the full ext.ent of.the liabilities against their '£lo,ooo loan but'-we fear Mr there will be an insufficient margin left for ■that reasonable , extension of mains" which the/'Borough Council may jijfltlyr ■; "be expected to provide 'during the next two. or three, years. This mqans that the new Council will ■have to face a somowhat "exhausted treasury, and that tkero will bo very little money for expenditure under the new arrangements. For this reason we would like to see the best and most experienced residents in the town coming forward at the present, time to protect the town from financial embarrassment. Even ex-Mayors like Messrs Feist and Lowes' should realise the gravity of the situation, . tlibugh they may prefer on personal grounds to stand aloof, they should from a sense of duty to the town be' . willing to give their (services for a time in order to secure that the new departure which we are now taking shall not prove disastrous to the interests of the community. . A strong Council' may succeed in settling municipal matters on a satisfactory footing, but a weak one will probably result in an entanglement, which will only be relieved by an increase .of rates.' . -
