STRANGE OCCURRENCE NEAR MELBOURNE.
An extraordinary outrage was committed in broad daylight on December 22 at Footscray, a suburb near Flemington. -For some considerable time a young man, nineteen years of age, who,states that he is a.dauo and came out here when only seven years of age, and gives. two. names—Alexandra--Stobie and Hans Han-sen—was,-observed by another young man, a caipenter, whose'name has.not get transpired, to be loitering about at Upper Footscray in a suspicious- manner. At last he saw iflansen near the house of Mr 6. Fisher, a boiler maker, .who was away, .at work, and had left his children in the care of' his grandmother, Mrs McGlutton. Hansen got in through the window aud-the young carpenter ran over alone for tho purpose of frustrating any eviUwtentiqii which Hansen might have had. On reaching the spot lie found that the old lady had most courageously attacked the intruder, and he in return had placed a waist strap round her throat and drawn it tight and was also endeavouring to force a handkerchief down her throat. As soon as the carpenter rushed in Hansen mado off. The carpenter followed him, Tho pursuit was kept up for two miles, the carpenter, who is only a lad of eighteen, resolutely maintaining the chape. He also endeavored to frighten the fugitive by calling out that he was a detective. At last they passed some quarrymen. They all joined in the chase and Hanson w?s soon a captive, On being searched Hansen was found to have on him quite a miscellaneous collection, including Christmas and birthday cards, pencils, watch chains, lockets and a Savings Bank book. Hansen will be charged fo'r attempted murder.
