The first day. of the animal summer meeting of thoabove Club was held oil tho Opaki course yesterday, and proved .highly successful, Though the finishes in all except one event were not very close, the racing throughout was very fair. The attendauee was far beyond ..that at any pronous meeting, a great number taking advantage of the local trains, though tho Wellington train brought but few visitors to the course. A very large number found their way to tho convincing ground in 'bussoa, coachc3, and various other vehicles. Tho percentage of tho fair sex was much higher than usually seen on Wairarapa courses latterly. Tho police, under Sergeant Price, had not much to do. One individual who had been imbibing, and lay on the ground inviting anyono who liked to ".tread oil his neck," had to receive their.attention. There were the usual games, etc., which, as also the various booths, appeared to do a thriving business. The totalisator was faii'ly patronised, something: liko £i,26C being passed through. With the exception of tho Champagne Stakes.there wero no big dividends. In fchia event the totalisator man paid, out to a Maori on a wrong ticket, but after some trouble and the assiufcanco' of Sargonnt Price lie was lucky enough to get the money refunded, The Masfcerton Volunteer Band was in ; attendance and with some well played selections helped greatly to make things pleasant. Several improvements have been made, notably the arrangements of tho booths, and a part of the stand covered in' fur tho convenience of ladies—tho latter apparently being greatly appreciated, Tho course was in fine order, though a bit hard. The officers of the Club worked well, and the Secretary, Mr it. J. Fit'ton, proved a host in himself and succeeded in getting through the programme iu good timo to allow all who wished to do so to catch the 6,30 train trom the course. The followin? are the events IjASiEßibj-OpAKi Derby, of 85 sovs., second horse 10 sovs, For three-year-olds, Colts osfc 101b, fillws and geldings Pst 51b, li miles. P. F. All cried content, and faced the starter. . After- a lbt of trouble Mr Parsons got them away pretty evenly,' Kolln at once going to the front, closely attended by Smooth, Satanella, and Scrub, the others together a length away. Much the same, position was kept to opposite tho stand, when Scrub moved up a bit. and Rumour , improved her position. At the fai' turn Rollo and Scrub were raciog together at tho front, tho others, with the exception of The' Spy, who was beaten, being handy. Entering the straight Rumour came through, and running liko the game un she is, notwithstanding her heavy impost, soon had her field in difficulties, and caught the judge's eye by half a length, Fivstwater and Rollo being about the saine distance apart for tho places. Time, 2min 45,{sees. Totalisator 298, 83 on the winner, dividend £3 4s. Thompson's Boccaoio, by Dan O'Oonnell, 2yro, 7st 61b 0 According to public estimation, though live put up silk, there were only two in it—Orator and Cupid—and on these two the money was piled on thick, but the pot was upset by Mr Macara's nice little filly. Considering they wore youngsters, the field got away comparatively easy, and on very fair terms. Cupid was first- to move, Orator, Desmond and Minnie being immediately in attendance on him. Boccacio was outpaced from the fall of 'the flag, He has about tbo ugliest style of going of. anything we have seen, and unless he improves considerably ho will never be fit for even the commonest of hack races, At tho far turn Cupid was etill in front, but the filly had improved her position a bit, Entering tho straight the four might have been covered with a sheet,- but onco fairly into tho home stretch, the whips cuino out on all except tho daughter of Danebury, and amid oxcitin# cries of "Macara wins," Bhe gradually forged ahead and passed tho post by about a length, half a length separating Cupid and Orator, Desmond eloso up. The performance of Mr Maoara's filly is more meritorious as she was suffering from " shin sore," and on this account the public would have nothing to to do with him on the machino, and conseqently she paid the handsome dividend of £22 10s. Mr Tancred's handsome son of the Premier was a regular "chipof the old block," did not tako kindly to the crowd, or he might have been eve more handy at the finish. Time Imin 20 c. Totalisator 250,10 on the winner, dividend £22 10s. The clerk of fcho weather'seemed especially" gracious on fcho occasion of tliia race meeting, the day 'oei ng boan tif ut I ly cool through the rain that hac| .fallen on the previous night. The liorae3 on the ground were not first class, Ginri "having it all her own way in the two raceg for which she ran, and the mare would undoubtedly have won the third had alio not boon scratched. Only two started for the hurdles, and opinion seemed'to be divided as to the probable, winner, but lialicore was not good enough for the King and ho came home rathor an easy winner. A motley lot came out for the hack hurdles. Some ef ■ thoin were looking as if they could tackle a feed of oats rather than tho sticks, Exchange being ,the only decent looking hack among them, but their fencing was not so bad as was expected, In tho Flying Stakos Theodore ran a good horse, as also did Trohonga, and doubtless tho would ljav? got ft place had ho kept on the track. The hack races brought out good fields and more exciting finishes than the larger events. In the last hack race a warm argument took'placeas to who wen,Miro or Iris, some declaring for one and
Bimm for the other, but of courao' the judge's decision was decisive', The dividend tin this race was tho.largest during ; tho day, £22 being realized by tho lucky. \ investors. The Lower.
