A " wonderful Henn" has an announcement in another column. The Anglican Bishop of Wellington holds a confirmation in St. Matthew's Church on Thursday evening next. • We heal' that Mr R. It. Armstrong, the popular Secretary of the Wairarapa Jockey Club, 'entered for a novel race at Taranaki on Wednesday last, which is not unknown as the Wedlock Handicap.
Father Treacy notified to his congregation on Christmas Day that a confirmation osrvico would be held in St Patrick's .Church early in February by Bishop 'Redwood. As the Bißhop has not visited Masterion'for a crnsiderablo time, the occasion is. looked forward to with interest by the . Catholics of this district. A very pleasing ceremony was performed yesterday morning by the >nienibers of Mr Pearson's Private Brass Band, when, they presented to Mr T. Betty a,handsome gold .-locket, suitably' inscribed; W,a token, of respect on the occasion of his leaving' Masterton. Mr Pearson, in presenting the locket, spoke well of the ability of their'late bandsman, Mr Betty responded in a few well chosen words, and,the proceeding^terminated. The only accident to in the Wairarapa to report durina the holidays was one that happened to a lad named It. We' might (isle the genial District Manager of our Railways how he dovefails charges on the lino at holiday seasons when traffic is suspended. For instance, yesterday tho faio from Wellington to Mauriceville was 7s 9d, from Carterton to Mauriceville 3s Gd, and fromMastorton to Mauriceville 3s Id Thirteen miles for 3s 7d is hardly proportionate to twenty-throe miles for 3s Gel, or eightythree miles for 7s 9d. Tho high rates charged botween Masterton and Mauricoville crippled traffic on this portion of the lino during tho late festive season.
There is trouble at the Masterton -Gas .Works over the filling of the gasometer tank with water. Mr Hoar, contrary to general expectations, got a splendid Btream running and filled tlio lank to the specified hoight cm Friday at midnight, about hvo hundred thousand gallons being the quantity required. As soon as the water stopped, it was found that it gradually ..sank, and the stream was again turned on but the leak increased and the output gained on the supply. To ascertain tho cause of the outflow, ifc wa3 fouud necessary to empty tho tank. The extent of the leak can bo estimated by the fact that half of the quantity disappeared in about. twenty-four hours. It io to'be hoped that nothing more than a trifling' oversight has boen the cause of tho mischief, otherwise tho town will not receive its illumination by tho time specified, viz., tho middle of January. The Nnpior Telegraph refers as follows lo a project which we fancy has been pressed by Mr McOardle on the Government for some months past:—"Most certainly at the next.redistribution-of seats a new district should bo createdwhioh should . include Iha bush portions of tho oxiatihg electorates- of Waipawa and Wairarapa, : With _ a membei' thoroughly ' with the Great timber and small farm .interests established in the Seventy-mile. Bush some greater pressure could be brought on the Government than can be done now. Mr Beetham is an opponent of the present Ministry and .can get nothing of much importance for his busli constituents. Mr' Smith is an out and out supporter of the Ministry, and as his vote is secure ho has not to be bought, and thus between these two stools the unfortunate bush settlers cannot gat their wants attended to." About that £35 to bb gives away.To the Editor-Sir, Will you allow 1110 through your columns to let the people of tho Wairarapa know that I am going to sell all my stock, consisting of men's, youth's, and boys' clothing, shirts, hats, liosiory, &c., at a great reduction in prices up till tho end of tho year; and also to remind them that every 0110 who buys goods to tho value of 2s fid gets a ticket in my £35 competition.
