This has boen the case, for Mr Solomon died at a late hour last night. His body and his legs and arms were swollen to a considerable extent. The Pahiatua Star says that rats are very plentiful at the new township of Ballancu, on the Masterton-Mangahao Block. We .trust this is not to indicate that this new centre is a political township. Messrs Georgeson & Co., tailors, of Wellington, have an advertisement in another column. ■lt consists of a notice from the Tailor'and Cutter, which speaks in most flattering terms of the firm's exhibit of Wellington made clothing at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition,

We aro sorry to learn that Colonel | McDonnell's official labors in this district are completed, and that ho proceeds this afternoon to Fdxton to perform other duties'in the Native Department of which he is an officer. Colonel McDonnell during liis short rasidence in Maaterton has made many frionds who witness liis departure from this town with regret. The event of to-day in Masterton is the soiteo which takes placo in the Theatre Royal this evening for the banefit of the St. Matthew's schoolroom fund, A considerable number of energetic ladies are engaged in making every preparation for ensuring the success of this ro-union, and the result of their efforts is certain to bo a largo and pleasant gathering. - That wonderfully lucky and astute Colonial, Dr W. L. Buller, New Zealand Commissioner to the Indian and Colonial Exhibition, has been created a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael awl St, Georgo (K.0.M.G.) Ho will now bo ablo to fight out in the lists on equal terms with Sir Robert Stout, tho Native Court, scandal which a short time ago waß the subject of a Parliamentary investigation.

Mr W. W. McCatdle, a member of the land Board, drew tho attention of the Minister of Lands yesterday morning (says the Pdat), to a ropbrt that that portion of Hastwell's clearing, Mauricoville district, which faced the main road, was being cut up into one-acre sections. Mr Ballance oppressed surprise at the statement, and promised to make onquirios into the matter. The hon. gentleman remarked that each of. the sections should not be less than ten acres. We have to add another to tho list of strange dreams that have been recorded from time to time, and.one that has turned out as lucky as it was odd. It appears that about a fortnight ago ouo of our local business men dreamt that he was at tho Riccartou racecourse and saw the New Zealand Oup race run and won by Spade Guinea. The dream was so realistic that he resolved to speculate a few pounds on the dream winner, with the result that ho took a wager of 100 to 4 about the horse, and netted £IOO by tho transaction. Perhaps if wo could get our scientists to study the question of dreams and emulate Joseph and Daniel of old, there might be more gained when we are asleep than wide awako. A fow weeks ago the Land Board decided, (says a Wellington contemporary), on the motion of Mr Recce, that it was desirable in the interests of settle-, ment throughout the Wairarapa and Forty Mile Bußh, that maps should be poated up at the several post offices, shewing all the Grown lands not disposed of, all endowments, educatioual reserves, native landß, and lands disposed of from time to time, to be shown in distinct colours, The resolution was brought under the notice of the Minister of Lands, and at a meeting of tho Board yesterday morning a letter was received from the Undor-Secretary of tho Department, stating that the hon., gentleman considered tho cost of tho proposed maps would be very considerable and that if they were, introduced into tho district other bodies would ask the Bame privilege. Thooxpense would be vory great, as tho maps would require revision from time to time. Tho letter went on to say that what the public were interested in was the lands open for sale, and as these wero not sold before survey it was thought that the lithographs and advertisomontß as at present issued gave sufficient publicity. Any additional information would only perplex the ordinary class of selectors. The Board did not consider that the Minister had arrived at thiß decision with all tho bearing of the case before him, and it was decided that a deputation should wait on him, and fully represent the matter. In accordance with this resolution, Messrs Bunny, Fitzherbert, and Reeße waited upon the Hon Mr Ballanco yesterday afternoon, and urged him to adopt tho system. After

listening to the views of the Board, the Minister admitted tkt the system would not bo so exponsivc asho at first imagined and he promised to consult with tho Surveyor-General bb to whether it could not be carried out. The fourth of tho series of St Matthews' entertainments was held in the schoolroom last evening and was largely attended. Tho recent additions are a great improvement, giving 'much, more room. The platform also was found to bo much better than the old ono, tho acoustic properties of the building being even bettor than before. An excellent programme had been prepared and opened with a nicely played pianoforte duet by Misses Jupp and Lowes, followed by a quartette •' Sweet and Low," by Mesdames Lawson and Clifton, and Mosars Moore and Coloman, and Master Komstedt, both of which were well received. The Masters Downard of Carterton, gave a character duot, " The .apple of my eye," in excellent style, and had to respond to a decided encore. Mr Howell gave "Thorns and Roses," and was loudly applauded, and Mrs Hogg followed with " Golden Love." Misses Jupp and Lowes rendered "The Elfin Call" bo much to the taste of the audience that they had to respond to an encore. A violin bolo " When the Blue Birds build again" by Miss Woods, a little girl from Greytown, was vociferously rodemanded, the same compliment being paid to Mr Lowes for his song " The Outpost", to which ho responded by singing " Tho Clang of the Hammer." Mrs Clifton followed with "Johnny Darling," which was also redemanded. Master Downard had to repeat his song in character "Driven from Home" which was followed by an instrumental selection by Messrs Keiaenberg, Lundqvißt and J. Bentley. Mr Ooleman'B song "In the days of Old" was received with applause. The duet by Mesdames CliftonandLawsonwas vociferously encered and had to berepeated, the same complimont falling to Mr Moore for his song "The Roll Call" and to Mrs Mayne for "The Little Maid of Arcadia." Messrs Keisenberg, Lundqvist and Bently gave an instrumental selection, consisting of a sot of waltzes by Mr L. -Wilson, late of Carterton, entitled "My First". .Waltz," which was loHdly applauded. MrGant excelled himself and had to respond to a well merited encore giving "Happy Moments," A character song "Babylon's a' Falling" by the, Masters Downards fairly brought down the house and they had to repeat it. A lengthy programme was brought to a conclusion with a quintette" Goastello! good night" by Mesdames Clifton and LawsonandMess'rsMoore ; and Coleman and Master Komstodt.

A drunk named James Burke was lined 5s or 24 hours by Mr Vv. Lowes, J,P., yesterday. Being impecunious, he took it out.
