CORRESPONDENCE.
! THE MAYORALTY. 10 THE EDITOR. Sm,—As the author of tlio memorial for the division of the Borough of Mib- ; terton into four wards, and learning tlwt Mr Caaelberg has doolinod to stand for re-election, and that ouo of the Council- ' lorß proposes offering himself for tho 1 office, I have resolved to allow myself to . bo nominated, and to allow my election to rest on the sole issuo whether tho ; Borough shall be divided into throe or ] four wards. I am, &o„ | Mayor. 1 IDVT. (To the Editor.) Sir, —Will you kindly allow mo spaca to reply to your contemporary the Star, which in its leading article of the 3rd inat, _ was good enough 1 to givo mo notoriety, taking for its text my action in the Council. The St&r politely (in its usual Billingsgate) stigamatised my conduct as that of a fault-finder, instancing tho case of a previous poundkeeper and the gas engineor. Ido not object to fair criticism, and sometimes like to read the Star in tho same way I read a novel. 1 know it is untrue, but it is plausiblo and raoy. However, loab any of your roaders should have seen the mis-statements of your contemporary and be led to believe that there may be some truth in what it Bays, I wish to put the actual facts before them, lu tho celebrated poundkeeper case, I moved in the Council that a reprimand and caution be givon, and the motion for immediate dismissal Ineithor moved nor seconded, nor did I agree with it. With reipect to iho Gas Engineer I have done only what I conoeiva to be uiy duty as a Councillor elected to represent the ratepayers to prevent loss t9 tho Borough, and in this matter I havo no personal feeling whatever, Thetruthful(?) narrative of the Star can be seen at onco by a reference to the minutes of the Council showing tho last election of Committees. I was proposed in due form as a member of Gas Committee, but pesitively declined to stand, although tho Star would make it appear that 1 was nominated and rejected. capable of such perversion of tho trith deserves to be as insignificant as tho Star. In conclusion I may say that I am prepared to justify ray actions in the Council to the ratepayers, and prove to them that I have faithfully, impartially, and to the best of my abilities endeavored to carry out my duties as a Councillor although subjected to unpleasantness and a tirade of abus# at the handß of a penny-a-liner. I am, etc., S. K. GjLPPEE,
